Sir,—

Whareama, 31st December, 1872.

I have the honor to forward you the following Report for the year ending 31st December, 1872.

It is impossible to furnish a correct statement of the condition the various flocks in the district are in before shearing is over.

I regret exceedingly to report so many flocks still scabby; but, with three exceptions, there is very little to be seen upon them. On several of the largest runs that have been scabby for a long time the disease is confined to one part of the run. The owners are now reaping the benefit of boundary fences; had they been obliged to drive the sheep back from the boundaries, as in years past, the whole flocks would have been badly diseased. There is another benefit derived from boundary fences—with an increase of stock sheep are in better condition, and generally speaking there is a much heavier clip of wool than I have seen for some years.

As large contracts for divisional fencing are spoken of for the coming season there is a fair prospect of the disease being stamped out on many of the runs now infected by next year.

In 1868 I forwarded a report to Government, expressing my fears that if flock owners were not compelled to have proper appliances for dipping on their stations that several of the coast runs, and the rough country inland, were in danger of infection from stragglers (the sheep had been removed from coast runs). Nearly two years afterwards the disease came on those places without any preparation having been made.
