New Zealand Gazette

The official newspaper of record for the New Zealand Government, from 1840 to the present day.

General notes:

For most of the Gazette's timeline, there were three types of issue:

  • Ordinary editions
  • Supplements to the ordinary editions (these usually concerned a specific topic)
  • Extraordinary editions (often a time-sensitive announcement of some kind)

From the 1980s there were additional types:

  • Special editions (basically Extraordinary editions)
  • Customs Editions
  • Commercial editions
  • Trade and Industry editions
  • Professional & Trade Lists (eg, registers of teachers)

Issue numbers

  • Issues are numbered from No. 1 in January each year, and are in chronological order.

Page numbers

  • within each year, page numbers are continuous between issues (until 2014)
  • in early issues, the first page (with the masthead) usually omits the page number, so it must be inferred from subsequent pages.
  • page numbering generally includes blank pages at the end of the issue. For example, a one-page issue might have pages 10 and 11 (a blank page) with the next issue starting at page 12.
