New Zealand Gazette
The official newspaper of record for the New Zealand Government, from 1840 to the present day.
General notes:
For most of the Gazette's timeline, there were three types of issue:
- Ordinary editions
- Supplements to the ordinary editions (these usually concerned a specific topic)
- Extraordinary editions (often a time-sensitive announcement of some kind)
From the 1980s there were additional types:
- Special editions (basically Extraordinary editions)
- Customs Editions
- Commercial editions
- Trade and Industry editions
- Professional & Trade Lists (eg, registers of teachers)
Issue numbers
- Issues are numbered from No. 1 in January each year, and are in chronological order.
Page numbers
- within each year, page numbers are continuous between issues (until 2014)
- in early issues, the first page (with the masthead) usually omits the page number, so it must be inferred from subsequent pages.
- page numbering generally includes blank pages at the end of the issue. For example, a one-page issue might have pages 10 and 11 (a blank page) with the next issue starting at page 12.
