✨ Sheep Inspection and Land Claims
47
A great deal of valuable time was lost, and the result was a loss of thousands of pounds
to the sheepowners, and I much fear the disease will prove a constant source of anxiety
for some years to come, notwithstanding the strenuous efforts made to overcome it.
There are, I think, two very serious mistakes being made by some sheepowners
within the last two or three years. 1st. Attempting to rear Leicester, Cotswold, and
Romney Marsh sheep on rough hilly runs; these sheep are unsuited by nature for such
pastures, and consequently unprofitable. Merinos would be found most profitable on
such ground. 2nd. For breeding some seasons with long-woolled rams and other
seasons with Merinos, in some instances both kinds of rams in the flock at once. If
such a course is followed for a few years more there will be more hair than wool in some
flocks. It is to be regretted so little attention is paid to the selection of rams by many
sheepowners.
I have the honor to remain,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
THOMAS TELFORD,
Inspector of Sheep East Coast District.
Henry Bunny, Esq., Provincial Secretary,
Wellington.
Owing to the refusal of some of the principal flockowners to send in their returns
for May, 1872, I have been unable to complete my annual Report. I have the honor to
enclose a list of names.
Your obedient servant,
Thos. TELFORD.
