Proclamation.

By His Honor William Fitzherbert, Esquire, Superintendent of the Province of Wellington, in the Colony of New Zealand.

WHEREAS by an Act of the Provincial Council of the Province of Wellington, Session IV., No. 13, it is enacted among other things that after the first day of October, 1857, all cattle above the age of twelve months shall be branded with the brand of the owner, and certain penalties are imposed for the neglect thereof. And whereas it is further enacted that every owner of cattle shall cause a correct copy or impression of his brand to be registered with some Registrar of Cattle Brands appointed as hereinafter provided, and certain penalties are imposed for the neglect thereof. And whereas it is further enacted that the Superintendent may appoint a Registrar or Registrars of Brands for such district as to him may seem fit, and with the advice of his Executive Council make such rules and regulations for the management of the office of Registrar, and fix the scale of fees for registration, and from time to time alter such appointments, rules, regulations, and fees as he, with such advice as aforesaid, may deem expedient. Now therefore I, William Fitzherbert, Superintendent of the Province of Wellington, by virtue and in exercise of the power and authority vested in me by the said Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that for the purposes of the said Act the portion of the said Province lying between the following boundaries shall be the Wanganui District for registration of cattle brands: Bounded towards the North by the Province of Auckland, towards the East by the Province of Hawke’s Bay, towards the South-East by the Manawatu River, towards the South and South-West by Cook’s Straits from the mouth of the Manawatu River to the Patea River.

And I, the said William Fitzherbert, in further exercise of the power and authority vested in me as aforesaid, do hereby, with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the Province of Wellington, make the following rules and regulations for the guidance of the Registrars, and to which all persons concerned are hereby required to conform under the penalties imposed by the Act:—

1st. That on or before the first day of January, 1873, all owners of cattle brands within the Wanganui District shall send free of charge to the Registrar of Brands for the said District, for the purpose of being re-registered, an exact copy of the brand used in branding his cattle on a piece of foolscap paper, and all registered brands not having been so re-registered by the expiration of the aforesaid date are hereby cancelled.

2nd. That every owner of cattle shall, within one month after he has become so, cause an exact copy of the brand used by him in branding his cattle to be registered with the Registrar of Cattle Brands for the said District.

3rd. That all copies shall be accompanied by a letter addressed to the said Registrar signed by the proprietor of the said brand, and declaring the same to be a true copy.

4th. That the sum of ten shillings shall be paid for the registration of every brand, and no brand shall be filed or registered by the said Registrar until he shall have received the fee for the same.

5th. That the said Registrar shall, on payment of such fee, file such copy in his office, and shall record the same in a book to be kept for that purpose.

6th. That the said Registrar shall pay all such sums received by him to the Provincial Treasurer of the Province for the time being, who shall place the same to a separate account, and all such sums shall be set apart for the purposes of carrying out the provisions of the said Act.

7th. That such files and books shall be open to the inspection of all persons requiring the same at all reasonable hours on payment of one shilling for such inspection.

Sheep Inspector’s Report.

NOTICE has been received at this office from the Inspector of Sheep for the Wanganui District that he has granted a clean certificate to Messrs D. and W. Blair, dated 25th September, 1872, for a flock of hoggets (350.)
