Sir,—I do myself the honor to hand you herewith tabulated statements of the cost to this Province of the Inmates of the Hospital, Lunatic Asylum, and Gaol, respectively; the last named Return showing also the cost per prisoner as compared with the principal Gaols of Great Britain.

I beg leave to add that the Returns are confined to the years 1857, 1858, and 1859, as those are the only years for which the original vouchers for payments are still in this office.

In 1857, rather more than one fifth, or 20·846 per cent.

“ 1859, rather more than two sevenths, or 28·997 “

Average rather less than one fourth, or 24·549 “
