conveyance of a Fortnightly Mail between Wellington, Grey Town, and Masterton, for a period of 12 Months.

The Mails to leave Wellington every alternate Wednesday, at 12 o’Clock. The Grey Town Mail to be delivered on the Friday following, at 4 p.m.; and the Masterton Mail on Saturday at 10 a.m.; and the return Mails from Masterton, and Greytown, to leave Masterton on Monday at 10 a.m.; and to be delivered in Wellington on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The Contractor will be required to provide Security for the due performance of his agreement.

Tenders should state the mode of Conveyance, and the rate for the full period of the Contract.

MAIL TO AHURIRI.

Post Office, Wellington,
December 24th, 1857.

SEALED TENDERS (in duplicate) will be received at this Office, on or before the 1st of February next, from Persons desirous of contracting for the conveyance of a Fortnightly Overland Mail between Wellington and Napier, for a period of 12 Months.

The Mail to leave Wellington every alternate Tuesday, at 12 o’Clock, (commencing on the 16th February,) and to arrive at Napier on the succeeding Monday. The return Mail to leave Napier also every alternate Tuesday, at 12 o’Clock, (commencing on the 23rd of February,) and to arrive in Wellington on the following Monday.

If the Contractor should find that he would not be able to commence the Service so soon as specified above, he must state when he would be in a position to do so.

Further particulars may be ascertained on application to the Postmasters at Wellington or Napier.

The Contractors will be required to provide Security for the due performance of his agreement.

SUPREME COURT.

NOTICE is hereby given, that a Sitting of the Supreme Court, for the Despatch of Criminal Business, will be holden at the Court House, Wellington, on

Monday, the eleventh day of January next, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at which time and place all persons under Recognisances to appear, either as Prosecutors, Defendants, or Witnesses, are required to give their attendance.

Civil Causes will be taken immediately after the conclusion of the Criminal Business.

ADDITIONS and alterations at the Signal Station. Three masted Schooner, triangle, with a cross under; Brigantine, triangle, with a circle under; Mail Vessel, descriptive signal with a red flag at the mast head.

Owners or Agents of Vessels may have their private signals hoisted at the yard arms by applying at the Harbour Master’s Office.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

Harbour Master’s Office,
Wellington, December 23, 1857.

A RED BUOY has been placed off Ward’s Island, in 4 ½ fathoms, from which the Island bears E.N.E. about three quarters of a mile. About 40 fathoms inside of the buoy there is a shoal with 6 feet at low water.

The Red Buoy off the Bully Rock has been replaced by a Black one.

SAILING DIRECTIONS.

FOR PORT NAPIER AHURIRI.

The Channel runs out along the East side of the Rangitera bank, which bank extends North one third of a mile from the West side of the entrance.

The Bar runs from the beach eastward to half way between the outer end of the Rangitera and the Shore. The bar is 9 feet at low water spring tides; deepens directly outside to three fathoms; and inside to three, and four and a-half in the narrows. The rise of water at ordinary tides is 3 feet and spring tides 4 feet. Full and change 7h. 50m.

Running into the Harbour bring a Beacon that is situated on a low spit inside the Harbour in a line with the West end of a grove of trees about three miles inland drawing the Beacon to the centre of the grove as you approach the entrance.
