Education Board Report

TARANAKI GOVERNMENT GAZETTE.

At a recent visit of the Inspector he spoke very favorably of this school, both as to its construction, and the progress made by the scholars.

Maintaining in the hands of the Board. The Board intend to take steps at an early date to engage a competent teacher to undertake the management of this school. The school at Waihi, conducted by Miss MacEacharn, to which the Board granted aid to the extent of £40 per annum, has been dissolved.

HAWERA SCHOOL.

A new school has been erected at Hawera, being a fac-simile of the one at Patea, enclosed in about five acres of land. The want of a teacher’s dwelling is here felt even more so than at Patea, and the Board anticipate a difficulty in retaining competent teachers, unless this want is supplied. Mr. Harkness, who conducted this school, was superseded in the month of March, and Mr. Dunne appointed, which latter resigned in October. The Board then advertised for applications; and from some very highly eligible applicants from all parts of New Zealand selected Mr. Chamberlain, from the Nelson Province; and they confidently hope to be able to report more favorably of the advancement made during the ensuing year than they are able for the past.

KAKARAMEA AND MANUTAHI.

The Board found with the funds at their command it was impracticable to build a proper school, and have, therefore, to meet the urgent demand of the settlers, erected a teacher’s dwelling house at Kakaramea, one of the rooms to be used temporarily as a school room. The teacher will reside there, holding a school during the morning, and proceed thence to Manutahi (where the Board have secured the Blockhouse as a temporary measure) to hold school in the afternoon. This system is adopted for the sake of economy for the present, and until the Board are in a position to maintain education at both schools separately. From the application already referred to, a gentleman was selected for this place (Mr. R. T. Brown), and will enter upon his duties forthwith, the building having just been completed.

KETEMARAE AND WAIHI.

To make some provision for education in this part of the district, the Board have purchased one acre of land and erected a teacher’s dwelling thereon; one room to be used for the present as a school room. The building will be completed during the present week, and it may be here mentioned, that the balance of the contract price due, together with the cost of fencing in the land and enclosing about six acres round the Kakaramea school house, absorbs nearly the whole of the balance remaining in the hands of the Board.

WHENUAKURA.

Nothing has been done as yet in this portion of the district through insufficiency of funds.
