Education Board Report

TARANAKI GOVERNMENT GAZETTE.

Trust Ordinance had received the sanction of His Excellency the Governor, the Board called for tenders for the lease of the reserves therein specified, and (with the exception of a few town sections) have been leased at very satisfactory rents. Since then, however, they have received authority to lease several others from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, which leases will be offered by auction on the 8th instant; and it is estimated the whole will yield about £376 per annum.

GRANT IN AID.

At the last session of the Provincial Council, a sum of £300 was voted in aid of the Patea District Education Board, £150 of which has been received, the remaining £150 still remaining due.

EDUCATION RATE.

The rate this year will amount to £260, being £30 in excess of the previous year, which will give some idea of the rate of increase in the population, and as the majority are married men and householders, the number of children increase in proportion, and greater facilities are required to meet the increasing demand for education. It is hoped that the rates outstanding, viz., £70, will be all collected without resorting to legal measures.

ESTIMATED RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE FOR CURRENT YEAR.

The estimated income for the ensuing year is—Rent of Reserves, £376; Education Rate, £280; School Fees, £100; Incidental, £24; Total, £780.

In a letter forwarded to your Honor in council, November 23rd, 1875, was enclosed an estimate of the receipts and proposed expenditure for the period ending September 30th, 1876, viz., nine months, the estimated deficiency being there placed at £2,042 10s. The Board still consider that to carry out their proposed work they will require the sum as above.

IN CONCLUSION

The Board would beg to remind the Government of the vast importance to which this district is attaining; the influx of population is rapid, and there is every probability that it will steadily increase. The want of schools and education must follow of necessity. Already there are sufficient children in each locality to warrant a school, and it is the full intention of the Board to establish good schools with dwelling houses, and all necessary equipments complete, so that a course of education may be established upon a basis equal, if not superior to any district in New Zealand.

And the Board would express the hope that your Government will approve of the views herein expressed, and accord them every support.

I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(By order) WM. COWERN,
Secretary and Treasurer Patea Education Board.

His Honor the Superintendent,
Province of Taranaki,
New Plymouth.
