REPORT OF THE PATEA EDUCATION BOARD.
Patea, 1st January, 1876.
Sir,—In compliance with the provisions of the Taranaki Education Ordinance of 1874, I have the honor, by direction of the Patea Education Board, to present you with the following report of their proceedings during the past year.
Two new members have been added to the Board, viz.: Messrs Coutts and McRae, in accordance with the provisions of the Amendment Ordinance of 1875. C. A. Wray, Esq., one of the members originally elected, and who also occupied the chair, having resigned his seat, the vacancy has been filled up in accordance with clause 11 of the Act by the election of Wm. Dale, junr., Esq.
During the past year the revenue of the Board from all sources was £1,631 6s 10d; this includes £1,121 17s 7d balance on hand from last year—the expenditure amounts to £1,362 1s 5d, leaving a balance of £269 5s 5d on hand with which to commence the year 1876. To this balance may be added £150, being half of the sum voted by the Provincial Council last session and not yet received.
A balance sheet accompanies this report in accordance with clause 20 of the Ordinance, supported with an abstract and vouchers accounting for all receipts and expenditure during the year.
The Board have carried out as far as practicable with the funds at their command the views conveyed by them in last year’s report, and will endeavor to explain their action under the headings as given below:—
PATEA SCHOOL.
This school, which at the time of last year’s report was in course of construction, has been completed, and is of excellent material and workmanship, combining all the latest improvements adopted in other Provinces. It will accommodate about sixty children, and owing to the rapid increase in the attendance it will be necessary to enlarge it as soon as possible. This school is situated in a reserve of five acres, which has been well fenced in and planted with furze hedge. It is of the first importance that a teacher’s dwelling house should be erected in conjunction with the school with as little delay as possible.
