SIR,—As the public mind has been
considerably excited in consequence of
the 'Halcione' proceeding to Welling-
ton without landing the immigrants
brought by her for this place, and
many surmises are circulated as to the
cause of her sudden departure, and the
matter being of great importance as
affecting the future prosperity and
progress of the province, I have to
request that you will be good enough
to forward me a written report at your
earliest convenience upon the subject—
as to the causes that induced the vessel
leaving here for Wellington direct
instead of remaining at anchor or
standing off to sea until the weather
had abated; and upon whose authority
and advice this was done. Also,
whether you attach blame to the boat-
ing service of this place, or the Waitara
tag, for the tardiness with which the
immigrants were landed from the
vessel on the morning in question; and
whether, if greater activity and dis-
patch had been used, the whole of the
immigrants could have been landed
before she proceeded to sea on the
occasion in question.—I have, &c.,

SIR,—In reply to your letter of yes-
terday's date, with reference to the ship
'Halcione' proceeding to Wellington, I
have the honor to report as follows:—

From my own sad experience on
the 13th September, 1853, and also on
the same date, 1857, in holding on too
long, I deemed it prudent to get the
ship to sea without delay, if I wished
to take her anchor with her. -
That the master directs the course
of his own ship without reference to
others, and that the interests of his
owners directed him to Wellington.
