ELECTION OF A MEMBER OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL FOR THE GREY AND BELL.

IT is notified for general information that a writ for the election of a Member of the Provincial Council for the Grey and Bell District having been issued in accordance with the provisions of “An Act to grant a Representative Constitution to the Colony of New Zealand,” the Returning Officer for the said District has returned the said writ, with a certificate to the effect that

was duly elected on the 11th day of May, 1866, to serve as a Member of the Provincial Council for the Grey and Bell District in the place of Robert Pitcairn, resigned.

PUBLIC FOOTPATHS.

New Plymouth, May 16, 1866.

IN exercise of the authority vested in me by the “Municipal Police Ordinance, 1862,” I, HENRY ROBERT RICHMOND, Esquire, Superintendent of the Province of Taranaki, do hereby give notice and declare that the undermentioned footways in the Town of New Plymouth shall henceforth be deemed and taken to be Public Footpaths within the meaning of an Ordinance of the Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand and of the Legislative Council thereof, intituled “An Ordinance to provide for the protection of Footpaths in the Colony of New Zealand,” and shall be protected accordingly:—

Vivian-street, from Robe-street to Brougham-street, on both sides, 12 feet wide.

Brougham-street, from Devon-street to Fulford-street, on both sides, 12 feet wide.

Powderham-street, from Robe-street to Brougham-street, south side, 12 feet wide.

Compensation Court Office,
Auckland, April 23, 1866.

UNDER the authority of the “New Zealand Settlements Act, 1863,” the order dated the 12th day of April, 1865, for regulating the proceedings of the Compensation Court is hereby annulled, and it is ordered as follows:—

The proceedings of the Compensation Court with respect to addresses and precedence of Council, examination of witnesses, and other matters attending the hearing of the claim shall, as nearly as circumstances will permit, follow the course of proceeding obtaining in the Supreme Court.

The claimant in each case shall be considered the plaintiff, and the Crown the defendant. In all cases of opposing claimants, the counterclaimant to the person whose case is being heard shall be considered as a defendant.
