β¨ Education Ordinance
- The Short Title of this Ordinance shall be the "Education Ordinance 1867."
Repealing clause.
- The "Education Ordinance 1862" and the "Education Ordinance No 2 1862" are hereby repealed.
Education Committee to be appointed.
- For the purposes of this Ordinance a Board of six persons shall be appointed of whom three being members of the Provincial Council shall be elected by the Provincial Council and the remaining members shall be appointed by the Superintendent. The Superintendent shall be a member in addition to the aforesaid number and when present shall preside and such Board shall be called the Education Board.
Term of office.
- The members of the Education Board shall hold office until ten days after the first meeting of the next succeeding Provincial Council.
Superintendent to make grants of money.
- The Superintendent from and out of any sum or sums of money that may be voted by the Provincial Council for the purpose of Education, cause grants of money to be made towards the support of public Schools within the Province. The claims for such aid and amount thereof to be determined by the Education Board and shall be subject to the following conditions.
I. No aid shall be given to any School which does not show an average attendance of 12 pupils, on behalf of which a sum of at least fifty pounds shall be guaranteed to be raised by School fees or local contributions.
II. The grant in aid to be given to any School to be at the discretion of the Board, and shall not in any case exceed fifty pounds sterling, and no School shall receive aid which, in the opinion of the Board, ought, from the number of scholars or situation of the School in relation to population, to be self-supporting.
III. That Schools in country districts shall have a preferential claim over those in towns.
IV. No grant shall be made to any School situate within one mile in towns, or two miles in country districts, of another school already established under the provisions of this Ordinance.
V. No school shall receive aid unless subject to inspection at the instance of the Board; nor unless such school is regulated in conformity with the general regulations adopted by the Board for the government and good order of schools.
