ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF CONSTRUCTING 132 CHAINS 45 LINKS OF ROADWAY, NEAR THE ORETI RIVER (TOGETHER WITH THE NECESSARY BRIDGES, CULVERTS, &c.) ON THE RIVERTON ROAD VIA WALLACETOWN.

96·50 chains of formation and ditching, including the necessary embankments (swampy ground)

36·95 chains of formation and ditching (on high ground)

One bridge, having a span of 39 feet in the clear, constructed of two bays, 19 feet each clear

One bridge, having a span of 34 feet in the clear, constructed of two bays, 17 feet each clear

One culvert, 41 feet in length, 3 feet by 2 feet

132·45 chains gravelling, to be thoroughly cleaned (and taken from the Oreti River), and laid on the road 14 feet wide by 9 inches in depth, equal to 25 yards 18 feet cube per chain, with an average lead of 66·23 chains, requiring a total quantity of 3,335 cubic yards.

Built in 1864 as a Masonic lodge, this building was purchased by the Southland Provincial Council as their council chambers in 1866. It still stands today.
