Extract from Section XIV of the “Education Ordinance, 1864.”
On the second Monday in the month of January in each year, a public meeting of the owners and occupiers of land and householders in every Educational District, being male persons above twenty-one years of age, shall be held at a time and place to be fixed by the Secretary of the Board, and notified by public advertisement at least one month previously, and in such other manner as the Board shall direct, and at such meeting a Chairman shall be chosen and the School Committee for the preceding year shall give a full report of their proceedings, and thereupon the electors present shall proceed to elect, either by show of hands or by ballot, as shall be determined upon by the said meeting, a new School Committee for the ensuing year of not less than five nor more than nine persons possessing the qualifications prescribed by clause 13, and may re-elect all or any of the persons going out of office to be members of such new Committee, and every Committee so to be appointed shall hold office until the appointment of their successors.

THE DIRECTORS of the CALEDONIAN SOCIETY of OTAGO have agreed to offer the following Prizes at the forthcoming Annual Gathering, on the 1st and 2nd January, 1872.
For an Essay on the “Writings of Sir W. Scott and their influence on the present age”—1st prize £5, 2nd prize £2 10s.
For Children who have attended any Elementary School in the Province during the current year. Three prizes in each of the following subjects, of £1 10s., £1, and 10s:—
I. British History, from the Accession of George I. till the Outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. Text Books, British Empire, S. S. B. A., Collier’s British History, and Tales of a Grandfather.
II. Analysis of a portion of “Gloomy Winter’s Noo Awa.”
III. Recitation from a Scottish author (in the Scottish dialect).
IV. Recitation from an English author. (Recitations to be not less than twenty lines.)
V. A prize of £1 10s. for general excellence in all the above subjects.
The Essays to be sent in to the undersigned not later than the 28th December, 1871.
The examination of School-children will be held on Saturday, 30th December, 1871, at a time and place to be named hereafter.
Intending Competitors for the School Prizes are requested to forward their names to the Secretary on or before 25th December.

PRESBYTERIAN Fast Day in Dunedin, being Thursday, 14th December current, the Provincial Government Offices in Dunedin will not be opened on that day.
THE Clarendon Road Board hereby notifies its intention to apply to the General Road Board at the January meeting, for authority to levy a Highway Rate of One Shilling in the £ on the annual value of all lands rateable in the district, for the year 1871-72.
The Assessment Roll lies at Mr. Neil M’Bride’s house for inspection, for fourteen days from this date.—R. B. TWELVETREE, Clerk. Lake Waipori, 30th November, 1871.
NOTICE.—The Waimatuku Road Board hereby notify their intention of applying at the first meeting of the General Road Board that will be held after 20th December prox., for authority to levy a Highway Rate of 3d. per acre for the current year in the above road district.
The Assessment Roll is open for inspection at the School-house, Flint’s Bush, for fourteen days from date (Sundays excepted), between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.—J. FULLARTON, Clerk to Local Board. Flint’s Bush, 24th November, 1871.
ADVERTISEMENT.—Notice is hereby given, that all Road Rates due in the Highcliffe district for the present year, 1871-72, must be paid to me at the School-house, Highcliffe, on or before Friday, the 29th inst.
