✨ Licensing Districts Proclamation
[Proclamation]
Of Licensing Districts under the Licensing Ordinance, 1864.
WHEREAS by the tenth section of the “Licensing Ordinance, 1864,” it is enacted that the Superintendent of Otago, as soon after the coming into operation of the said Ordinance as conveniently may be, shall for the purposes of this Ordinance, divide the settled portions of the said Province into such and so many districts as he may think fit to be called Licensing Districts, and when and so soon as such divisions shall have been made, the Superintendent shall, by proclamation published in the Government Gazette of the said Province, declare such districts, and by such proclamation define the boundaries thereof;
Now therefore I, John Hyde Harris, by virtue and in exercise of the powers vested in me in this behalf, do hereby Proclaim and Declare that from and after the day of the date hereof, and until further notice, there shall be within the Province of Otago for the purposes of the said Ordinance Eleven Licensing Districts, to be called respectively as follows:—
- Clyde Licensing District.
- Queenstown Licensing District.
- Oamaru Licensing District.
- Waikouaiti Licensing District.
- Dunedin Licensing District.
- Port Chalmers Licensing District.
- Taieri Licensing District.
- Tokomairiro Licensing District.
- Clutha Licensing District.
- Hamilton Licensing District.
- Lawrence Licensing District.
And I do hereby Proclaim and Declare that the said several districts shall be respectively bounded and defined in manner following, that is to say—

Clyde Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise the towns of Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Gladstone, Newcastle, Pembroke, and Wakefield, together with all that area bounded towards the north by the Province of Canterbury; towards the east by the Province of Canterbury and the Otamakau Creek to the Hawkdun Mountains; towards the south by the Dunstan Gold field; and towards the west by a direct line from Parkburn at its source to the Wanaka Lake, and by the Wanaka Lake to the Province of Canterbury, also that area within the Dunstan Gold Field which has been or may be withdrawn from the operation of the Gold Fields Act.

Queenstown Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise the towns of Queenstown, Kingston, and Frankton, together with all that area bounded towards the north by the Province of Canterbury; towards the east by the Clyde Licensing District; towards the south by the Dunstan Gold Field; and towards the west by the Wakatipu Gold Field, also all that area within the Wakatipu Gold Field which has been or may be withdrawn from the operations of the Gold Fields Act.

Oamaru Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area bounded on the north by the Clyde Licensing District; on the east by the Province of Canterbury; on the south by the Ocean; and on the west by the Horse Range and Kakanui Mountains and the Mount Ida and Dunstan Gold Fields.

Waikouaiti Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area bounded on the north by the Oamaru Licensing District; on the east by the Ocean; on the south by a line running due west from Brinn’s Point to the Taieri Gold Field, and on the west by the Taieri and Mount Ida Gold Fields.

Dunedin Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area bounded towards the north by Waikouaiti and Port Chalmers Licensing Districts; towards the east by the Port Chalmers Licensing District and the Ocean; towards the south by the Ocean; and towards the west by the Taieri River and the Taieri Gold Field.

Port Chalmers Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area including the town of Port Chalmers, the Lower Harbour West Survey District, the Sawyer’s Bay Survey District, Sections numbered 88 to 115 inclusive, North East Valley Survey District, and Blocks 4, 5, 6, and part of 7, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District: bounded from the northwest corner of Block 4, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District, in a southerly direction, by the western boundary line of the said Block 4, to the northern boundary line of Block 6, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District, thence by the said northern boundary line of Block 6, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District, to the northeast corner of Block 7, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District; thence in an easterly direction by the said northern boundary line of the said Block 7, to the north west corner of Section 83, Sawyer’s Bay Survey District; thence in a south-easterly direction by the boundary line of the said Sawyer’s Bay Survey District to Otago Harbour, and thence by high-water mark to the starting point.

Taieri Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area bounded towards the north by the Tuapeka and Taieri Gold Fields; towards the east and south by the Dunedin Licensing District; and towards the west by the Taieri River, the Waihola Lake, and Molyneux Burn; also, all that area within the Taieri Gold Field, and south of the Rock and Pillar Mountains, which may be withdrawn from the operation of the Gold Fields Act.

Tokomairiro Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area bounded towards the north by the Tuapeka Gold Field; towards the east by the Taieri and Dunedin Licensing Districts; towards the south by the Ocean; and towards the west by the Clutha District.

Clutha Licensing District shall, for the purposes of the said Ordinance, comprise all that area bounded towards the north by the Nokomai and Mount Benger Gold Fields; towards the east by the Mount Benger and Tuapeka Gold Fields to Lovell’s Creek, thence by Lovell’s Creek, the Tuakitoto Lake, Kaitangata Lake and Creek, and the Clutha River, to the Ocean; towards the south by the Ocean; and towards the west by the Province of Southland.
