(b) Variable Speed Limit Sign (may be in the form of
either Type I or Type II).

Type I variable speed limit sign:

(i) Shape and Size: Square with sides at least 800mm.

(ii) Background Colour: Black.

(iii) Legend:

Roundel: Red, lit by means of light emitting diode,
fibre optic or other similar technology, at least
600mm outer diameter.

Speed Value: The number “40” at least 300mm high
created by yellow pixels, lit by means of light
emitting diode, fibre optic or other similar
technology or displayed with fluorescent
reflectorised material.

(iv) Yellow lights must be fitted in each corner and
operate by flashing diagonally two at a time.

Type II variable speed limit sign:

(i) Shape and Size: Square with sides at least 800mm.

(ii) Background Colour: Reflectorised white.

(iii) Legend: R22 Speed Limit sign with reflectorised red
roundel at least 600mm outer diameter and the
number 40 in black at least 300mm high.

(vi) Yellow lights must be fitted in each corner and
operate by flashing diagonally two at a time.

  1. Fixed School Zone Sign

General Purpose of Sign

A fixed school zone sign is used to warn motorists of the
presence of a school and imposes a 40km/h speed limit on
school days at specified times. The sign may only be erected
on side roads contiguous to the road over which a school
zone has been defined.

Description of Sign

(i) Shape and Size: Rectangular at least 860mm wide
and 1500mm high.

(ii) Background Colour: Reflectorised white.

(iii) Border: Reflectorised red.

(iv) Legend: The words SCHOOL ZONE in black letters
100mm high, letter stroke 15.5mm above an R22
Speed Limit sign with reflectorised red roundel of
outer diameter at least 600mm and number “40”
in black above no more than three lines of text in
black letters at least 80mm high, stroke width
12.5mm, comprising no more than two separate
times when the speed zone applies and the words
SCHOOL DAYS.

Note: If the speed zone is to apply for more than two
separate occasions during any day or the times during which
the school zone may apply varies from time to time, only
variable school zone signs may be used.

  1. School Zone Ends Sign

General Purpose of Sign

A school zone ends sign advises road users they are leaving
a school zone and the speed limit applying beyond the zone.

Description of Sign

(i) Shape and Size: Rectangular at least 800mm wide
and 1500mm high separated into two
approximately equal areas.

(ii) Background Colour:

Top area: Reflectorised white.

Bottom area: Fluorescent reflectorised yellow-green.

(iii) Border: Black.

(iv) Legend:

Top area: R22 Speed Limit sign with reflectorised
red roundel of outer diameter at least 600mm and
a number depicting the appropriate speed limit in
kilometres per hour in black;

Bottom area: The words SCHOOL ZONE ENDS
in black letters 125mm high, stroke width
19.5mm.

Schedule 2

  1. Placement of Signs

Each school zone shall be specified by a section of road and
have:

(a) at least one variable school zone sign at each end of
the said section of road facing motorists travelling
towards the school zone;

(b) at least one fixed school zone sign facing motorists
travelling towards the school zone along each side
road entering the section of road over which the
school zone has been specified unless a variable
school zone sign is installed; and

(c) at least one school zone ends sign facing motorists
leaving the school zone.

  1. Operation of School Zones

For the purposes of school zones, the following shall apply:

(a) All terms and conditions of any bylaw or other legal
instrument used to specify the school zone are
complied with.

(b) When the number 40 is displayed on the variable
school zone the maximum speed permitted within
the school zone is 40 kilometres per hour.

(c) During any of the periods displayed on a fixed
school zone sign the maximum speed permitted
within the school zone is 40 kilometres per hour.

Transit New Zealand Act 1989

Declaring State Highway to be Limited Access Road—Waikato Region

It is notified that Transit New Zealand, by resolution dated
5 June 2002 and pursuant to section 88 (1) of the Transit
New Zealand Act 1989, hereby declares those parts of State
highway described in the Schedule hereto and, as more
particularly shown on plans LR/164, LR/165, LR/161 and
LR/163 and accompanying Schedules held in the office of
the Regional Manager, Transit New Zealand, Hamilton, and
there available for public inspection, to be limited access
road.

Schedule

The section of State Highway No. 25 that is in
Thames-Coromandel and Hauraki Districts, commencing at
Waikiekie Stream Bridge and proceeding generally in a
southerly direction to Whitiroa Stream Bridge (Route
Position 206/3.06 to Route Position 217/8.01); a distance of
16.15 kilometres.

The section of State Highway No. 26 that is in
Thames-Coromandel District:

(a) Commencing at Hukutaia River Bridge and
proceeding generally in a northerly direction to
Puriri River Bridge (Route Position 80/0.00 to Route
Position 80/8.81); a distance of 8.81 kilometres.
