Traffic Regulations 1976

School Zone Signs

Pursuant to section 129 (6) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and pursuant to a sub-delegation from the Director of Land Transport Safety by an instrument dated 3 May 1999, I, Peter Graeme Croft, Manager Safer Roads, authorise the erection, installation and maintenance of the traffic signs described in Schedule 1 of this notice, and subject to the terms set out in Schedule 2 of this notice, in substitution for the speed limit signs specified in Regulation 129 of the Traffic Regulations 1976.

Schedule 1

  1. Variable School Zone Sign

General Purpose of Sign

A variable school zone sign is used to warn motorists of the presence of a school and when children are travelling to or from school, imposes a 40km/h speed limit by displaying this speed only during those periods.

Description of Sign

A variable school zone sign is a combination of a variable speed limit sign with a “SCHOOL ZONE” sign mounted below. The variable speed limit sign displays during each period the limit applies, a speed of 40km/h, and at all other times is blank.

(a) School Zone Sign

(i) Shape and Size: Rectangular 750mm wide, 550mm high.

(ii) Background Colour: Reflectorised fluorescent yellow-green.

(iii) Border: Black.

(iv) Legend: The words SCHOOL ZONE in black letters, height 125mm, stroke width 19.5mm.
