✨ Electoral Objections and Suggested Solutions
the region is exceedingly fragmented. Opotiki has little community of interest with the rest of the proposed Mahia Electorate.
Suggested solution The best solution would be a Raukumara Electorate combining the Gisborne and Opotiki Districts together with the Whakatane urban area including Edgecumbe. The populations in the Napier and Tukituki Electorates should be increased to their maxima to allow the inclusion of the Hawke’s Bay rural area in these two electorates.
33 011 b,n,h Objection S Russell (See General 002 for details on this objector’s overall strategy for electorate changes).
Objects to the inclusion of any of the Hastings District in the proposed Mahia Electorate on the grounds that this area’s community of interest is with Napier and Hastings. The objection is also made on the grounds of projected changes in population of the Hawke’s Bay Region.
Suggested solution Transfer all that part of the Hastings District in the proposed Mahia Electorate to the proposed Tukituki and/or Napier Electorate.
Objects to the name of the proposed Mahia Electorate on the grounds that other proposed changes would alter the composition of the electorate to include part of the Whakatane District and no part of the Hastings District.
Suggested solution Change the name of the electorate to East Cape.
34 Napier
Note The Opotiki District Council has filed an objection with consequential changes for this electorate. Please see Objection 33/009 (Mahia) for details
34 001 b Objection P F Smith, Chatham Islands Council
Objects to the lack of consistent representation for the Chatham Islands with it being placed in three different regions in the last five years.
Suggested solution That the Chatham Islands be able to approach Central Government directly.
34 002 b,h Objection P E Dicker, Chatham Community Focus Trust
Objects to the inclusion of the Chatham Islands in the proposed Napier Electorate on the grounds that direct public transport links exist with Wellington and Christchurch. The objector’s understanding is that the LATE agreement only relates to the Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust not the County Council or the community.
Suggested solution To maintain the status quo by including the Chatham Islands in the proposed Rongotai Electorate.
34 003 b,h Objection T T Solomon for and on behalf of Moriori Tchakat Henu Association of Rekohu Trust
Similar to Objection 34/002.
