33 009 b.h Objection Opotiki District Council

Objects to the :

i. overall general strategy used by the Commission.

ii. Opotiki area being placed in the proposed Mahia Electorate.

iii. separation of White (Whakaari) Island from the Opotiki District on the grounds Opotiki can only be linked to the Bay of Plenty area and in reaching its proposals the Commission failed to recognise these community interests, communication issues or topographical features, the significance and impact of changing regional populations, and the imperative of boundary stability.

Suggested solutions To unite White (Whakaare) Island with Opotiki. Should Opotiki not be included in Bay of Plenty then the seaward boundary should project true north from Ohiwa Harbour (the Opotiki District Boundary).

➢ Transfer Opotiki to a new Bay of Plenty Electorate.

➢ Create a new Western Bay of Plenty Electorate embracing parts of the proposed Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Coromandel, Karapiro and Rotorua Electorates.

➢ Consequential changes occur in the following proposed electorates.

– Rangitikei be redrawn using an east/west axis and breaching the Manawatu Gorge, and include Woodville and Dannevirke.

– Palmerston North takes some 1,200 from Rangitikei.

– Wairarapa moves north to take up much of Tukituki.

– Tukituki is eliminated. Population going to Wairarapa, Napier and Mahia.

– Napier loses Chatham Islands to Wellington Central. Picks up part of Tukituki.

– Mahia loses Opotiki area picks up part of Tukituki.

– Rotorua swaps population in the Pyes Pa area with that in the Reporoa area.

– Tauranga. Parts of Bethlehem are transferred to the proposed new western electorate.

– Coromandel and Karapiro boundaries are adjusted to achieve stability.

– Wellington Central picks up Chatham Islands.
