TARANAKI FISH AND GAME REGION

Reference to Description: Gazette, No. 83, of 24 May 1990, at page 1861.

1. INTERPRETATION

“Fly Fishing” in the Taranaki Fish and Game Region means to fish for sports fish with fly rod, fly reel, fly line and artificial fly.

2. OPEN SEASON

2.1 The following waters are open all year:

  • Lake Rotomanu;
  • Lake Mangamahoe, excluding the Waiwhakaiho inlet;
  • Opunake Lake;
  • Virginia Lake;
  • Lake Numunamu;
  • Waiwhakaiho River downstream from the end of Rimu Street extension;
  • Huatoki Stream downstream from Brois Street bridge;
  • Waitara River downstream from the Manganui River confluence;
  • Whanganui River (excluding tributaries);
  • Mangawhero River (excluding tributaries) downstream from the “golf course” bridge at State Highway No. 49;
  • Tokiahuru Stream downstream from the bridge at State Highway No. 49;
  • Waitaiki Stream downstream from the bridge at State Highway No. 49.

2.2 The following waters are open from 1 October - 30 June:

  • Manganuiateao River and its tributaries;
  • Retaruke River and its tributaries;
  • Tokiahuru Stream upstream from the bridge at State Highway No. 49;
  • Waitaiki Stream upstream from the bridge at State Highway No. 49;
  • Mangawhero River and its tributaries upstream from the “golf course” bridge at State Highway No. 49;
  • Raetihi Hydro Dam.

2.3 The following waters are open from 1 October - 30 April and then from 1 June - 30 September:

  • Lake Rotorangi from the dam face to the Mangamingi ramp;
  • Lake Ratapiko, except the inlet race;
  • Stony (Hangatahua) River downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Warea River downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Kapoaiaia Stream downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Waiau River downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Mangawhero Stream downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Otakeho Stream downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Kaupokonui Stream downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Waingongoro River downstream from the State Highway No. 45 bridge;
  • Patea River downstream from Patea Dam.

2.4 The following waters are open from 1 October - 20 April and then from 10 July - 30 September:

  • Lake Wiritoa;
  • Lake Pauri.

2.5 All other waters in the region are open from 1 October - 30 April.

3. AUTHORISED TACKLE

3.1 No licence holder shall use any double or treble pointed hook, or any multiple hook assembly.

4. FLY FISHING ONLY WATERS

4.1 The following waters are restricted to fly fishing only:

  • Lake Mangamahoe, including the Waiwhakaiho inlet.

5. ARTIFICIAL FLY AND SPINNER ONLY WATERS

5.1 The following waters are restricted to artificial fly and spinner only:

  • Mangaoraka Stream from the bridge at Te Arei Road West upstream to the bridge at Corbett Road;
  • Kaiauai Stream upstream of the bridge at Alfred Road;
  • Stony River from the bridge at State Highway 45 upstream to the bridge at Mangatete Road;
  • Kapuni Stream upstream from the bridge at Skeet Road.
