Definition of Areas

Area A: The Kawarau River catchment upstream of the Roaring Meg catchment (Power House) including Lake Wakatipu and tributaries.

Area B: The Clutha River catchment upstream of Alexandra including Lakes Wanaka and Hawea and their tributaries and outside Area A.

Area C: The Manuherikia River catchment and the Taieri River catchment upstream of and including the Nenthorn Stream catchment near Pukekaranga, the Shag River catchment above Dunback and the Waikouaiti River catchment above Bucklands Crossing.

Area D: The Taieri catchment upstream and including the Lee Stream catchment and outside Area C, the Waipori catchment upstream of Waipori Falls, including Lake Mahinerangi, the Clutha catchment upstream of Manuka Island and outside of Areas A, B and C and including the Kaitangata, Waiwera, Waihola and Pomahaka catchments, the Shag River river catchment below Dunback, the Waikouaiti River river catchment below Bucklands Crossing, the Catlins catchment, Tahakopa River catchment and all other catchments that drain into the sea between Tahakopa catchment and the region boundary at the Brothers point.

Area E: The coastal area of the Otago Fish and Game Region outside of Areas A, B, C and D running from the Catlins catchment to the Waikouaiti River Catchment (this includes the Lower Clutha, Lower Taieri, and Tokomairiro River Catchments).

Area X: Lake Onslow catchment.

Shooting Hours: 7.00 a.m. to 6.45 p.m. areas A & B, 7.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. areas C, D and E, except during the period 14 July 1996 to 27 April 1997 inclusive Canada goose may be hunted or killed 24 hours per day during the specified open season. Decoy Limit: No limit

Special Conditions

  1. No person shall use or cause to be used on any water within the region for the hunting or killing of game, any fixed stand, pontoon, hide, loo or maimai, except within a distance of 10 metres from: the water margin in non-tidal waters, or from the low water mark in tidal waters, or from the outside edge of the raupo growth where raupo abounds, without the prior consent of the Otago Fish and Game Council.

  2. It shall be an offence for any person to leave on the hunting ground the bodies or parts of bodies of black swan or other game shot in the Otago Fish and Game Region.

  3. Shooting from a boat is prohibited on the Clutha River on the opening weekend only.

  4. Chukar hunting is prohibited in the area of the Taieri Ridge north and east of the railway line from Mosgiel to Hyde.

  5. Canada geese can be hunted in some areas during the December - January closed season if an authorisation is obtained from the Otago Fish & Game Council and the hunting will not affect management activities or moulting waterfowl.

Closed Game Areas

Of the Closed Game Areas listed for the Otago Acclimatisation Society, numbers 3 and 11 are revoked.

Of the Closed Game Areas listed for the Southern Lakes Acclimatisation District, number 2 is revoked.

Definition of Areas

Area A: Paradise duck (4 May - 14 July 1996, bag limit 6 per day). Hunting is permitted in all that land in the Southland Fish and Game Region north of State Highway 1, between Mataura, Gore and Pukeuaru and north of State Highway 96 between Mataura, Winton and Wreys Bush and west of and including the Aparima catchment.

Area B: Paradise duck (4 May - 14 July 1996, bag limit 4 per day). Hunting is permitted in all of the remaining land in the Southland Fish and Game Region not described in Area A.

Area C: Canada Goose (1 February to 30 March 1997 incl.) Hunting is permitted in all that land within the Southland Fish and Game Region, except that area known and Gazetted as the Waituna Wetland Reserve
