  1. Prohibition of possession or control of spear gun
    4.1 No licence holder, when fishing for sports fish, shall be in possession, or be in control, of any spear gun or any pointed missile (other than a bullet) which is propelled by means of any mechanical or explosive device.

4.2 Where any licence holder is charged with an offence under subclause 4.1 it shall be a defence to the charge if the defendant proves that the speargun or pointed missile in the defendants possession or under the defendants control was not used in fishing for sports fish.

4.3 In this notice “explosive:” has the same meaning as in the Explosives Act 1957.

  1. Foul hooking of fish
    No licence holder shall attempt to foul hook any sports fish.

  2. Minimum size
    Every licence holder taking a sports fish which does not exceed the specified length shall immediately return it with as little injury as possible into the water from which it was taken.

  3. Open Season
    No licence holder shall fish for, take or attempt to take, any sports fish except during an open season.

  4. Authorised lures and baits
    Authorised lures and baits are:

  • Artificial or natural fly
  • Artificial or natural insect
  • Artificial or natural worm
  • Artificial or natural crustacea
  • Artificial or natural minnow
  • Artificial or natural fish (excluding fish ova, or any portion of a fish, or shellfish [mollusca])
  • Uncoloured bread dough
  • Artificial mouse
  • Artificial frog

AUCKLAND/WAIKATO FISH AND GAME REGION

Waitawheta Stream, from the upstream end of the public vehicle access on Franklin Road (as shown by a signpost) to its confluence with the Ohinemuri River all year
Waikato River all year
Waipa River downstream from Toa Bridge (some 16 km upstream from Otorohanga) to its confluence with the Waikato River all year
Puniu River downstream from the Seafund Road bridge to its confluence with the Waipa River all year
Mangawhio River between the Waikato River and the falls all year
Marakopa River from its junction with the Mangautahaua Stream to its mouth all year
Mangaotaki River, from the lower bridge (as shown by a signpost on the Mangaotaki Road (Pio Pio)), to its confluence with the Mokau River all year
Whanganui River, downstream from its confluence with the Whakapapa River all year 1 October-30 June (both days inclusive)
All other waters of the region, except those specified in Section 2 of this schedule 1 October-30 June (both days inclusive)
  1. Closed Waters
    No licence holder shall take sports fish from the following waters:
  • In all rivers, streams and their tributaries which flow into but not including Lake Arapuni, Lake Waipapa, Lake Karapiro and that part of the Waikato River downstream from the Maraetai Dam to above the Karapiro Dam, but does not include the following waters:
    • Waipapa River and tributaries
    • Mangawhio Stream and tributaries
    • Waipa Stream and tributaries
    • Pokaiawhenu Stream and tributaries
    • Waikato River
  1. Hours of Fishing
    All waters no restriction

  2. Coarse Fishing
    4.1 Fishing Competitions—Rods
    A licence holder participating in a fishing competition for perch, tench or rudd may have two assembled rods and running line provided only one of which shall be used for fishing at any one time.

4.2 A roach pole may be used to fish for and take perch, tench or rudd.

  1. Fishing Restrictions
    5.1 No licence holder shall fish for sports fish from any vessel not securely anchored in that part of the Waikato River between the Arapuni Dam and the upper limits of Lake Karapiro (as shown by the white marker post, situated 200 metres below the Huhuitaha Stream mouth).

5.2 No licence holder shall use any double or treble hook, or use any fixed assembly of hooks.

  1. Artificial Fly Only Waters
    6.1 No licence holder when fishing for sports fish shall use any lure or bait other than artificial fly in the following waters and all their tributaries:
  • Wairoa River from its source to the Hunua Falls;
  • Kauaeranga River;
  • Komata Stream;
  • Maratoto Stream from its source to the ford of the old Whangamata track;
  • Kahahu Stream (north-east of Okoroire);
  • Waipara River upstream from the first waterfall situated approximately 0.5 km from Lake Waipapa;
