(ix) To ensure a high level of competence in Maori language is achieved by each student.

- Constitution of the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Wananga Whare Tapere O Takitimu shall comprise:
(a) Five people appointed by the Minister.
(b) The principal, or principal designate.
(c) Not more than four persons co-opted by the Board.

Pursuant to sections 146 and 155 of the Education Act 1989, the Minister of Education, hereby gives the following notice:

This notice may be cited as the Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Uri A Maui.

The notice shall come into force on 1 January 1996.

I hereby establish in Gisborne a primary school called Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Uri A Maui, and designate the school as a kura kaupapa Maori.

Aims, purposes, and objectives of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Uri A Maui:
(i) To develop a high degree of self-esteem in every student.
(ii) To encourage a sense of pride, self-respect and self-confidence in Maoritanga.
(iii) To allow each student to discover his/her potential; to explore and extend their individual and group activity.
(iv) To teach the positive aspects of sharing, support and participation.
(v) To reinforce the practical and spiritual value of nga taonga Maori, especially language.
(vi) To cultivate an awareness of the place of the individual in Aotearoa and his/her relationship and responsibilities to all people and things in nature.
(vii) To enhance the cultural differences as a positive feature of a multi-cultural society.
(viii) To ensure a high standard of achievement in the acquisition of educational and vocational skills.
(ix) To ensure a high level of competence in Maori language is achieved.
(x) To allow each student to discover his/her potential as a future decision maker.
