Education Act 1989

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe

Pursuant to sections 146 and 155 of the Education Act 1989, the Minister of Education hereby gives the following notice:

Notice

  1. This notice may be cited as Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe.

  2. This notice shall come into force on the day after the date of its publication in the Gazette.

  3. I hereby establish at Kaikohe, a primary school called Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe, and I hereby designate the school as a kura kaupapa Maori.

  4. Aims, purposes and objectives of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe.

Together with the use of te reo Maori as the principal language of instruction the following aims, purposes and objectives constitute the character of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe:

(i) A commitment to preserve and maintain the taonga, culture and heritage of tupuna and to guarantee the survival of te reo Maori.

(ii) An obligation to ensure that mokopuna from kohanga reo will develop fluency in te reo Maori, and will receive instruction in tikanga Maori, arts and crafts, and genealogy with an understanding of the significance of taha wairua.

(iii) To create an environment in which self-esteem, discipline and respect embrace the mokopuna and instil in them the desire to strive for excellence.

(iv) To encourage, motivate, and excite children to learn and to develop skills for the future.

  1. Constitution of the Board of Trustees—The board of trustees of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe shall comprise:

(a) Five people appointed by the Minister;

(b) The principal, or principal designate;

(c) Not more than four persons co-opted by the board.

  3. I hereby establish at Glen Innes, Auckland, a primary school called Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Puau Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, and I hereby designate the school as a kura kaupapa Maori.

  4. Aims, purposes and objectives of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Puau Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa:

(i) All learning and teaching to be based on Te Aho Matua.

(ii) To develop Maori as a living language at all levels and in all areas.

(iii) To give children a true sense of identity, self-esteem, and confidence.

(iv) To develop individual potential, to be skilled in the use of modern technology, and to lay the foundations for one’s future.

  1. Constitution of the Board of Trustees—The board of trustees of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Puau Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa shall comprise:

(a) Five people appointed by the Minister;
