Pursuant to Section 197 of the Shipping and Seamen Act 1952
The Minister of Transport hereby amends:
The Lifesaving Appliances (Code of Practice for Existing Ships of Class VII) Notice 1989
In the notice with the above heading published in the New Zealand Gazette on the 31st day of October 1989, No. 190, at page 5323, revoke clause 9 and substitute the following:
“9. Ships where survival craft stowed more than 100m from stem or stern—Every ship of Class VII where the survival craft are stowed in a position which is more than 100m from the stem or stern shall carry, in addition to the liferafts required by subclause 2 (1) (b) and clause 4 of this Code of Practice, a liferaft stowed as far forward or aft, or one as far forward and another as far aft, as is reasonable and practicable. Such liferaft or liferafts may be securely fastened so as to permit manual release and need not be of the type which can be launched from an approved launching device.”

The Minister of Transport hereby amends:
The Lifesaving Appliances (Code of Practice for Class VI Ships) Notice 1989
In the notice with the above heading published in the New Zealand Gazette dated the 31st day of October 1989, No. 190, at page 5321, amend:
-
Clause 4 (1) by inserting the words “or inflatable boat” after the words “rescue boat” in line 3;
-
Clause 4 (2) by inserting the words “inflatable boats” after the words “rescue boats” in line 5; and
-
Clause 4 (3) by inserting the words “or inflatable boat” after the words “rescue boat” in line 1.

The Minister of Transport hereby amends:
The Fire Appliance (Code of Practice for Ships of Classes IV, V and Ships of Class VI Less Than 45m) Notice 1989
In the notice with the above heading published in the New Zealand Gazette on the 31st day of October 1989, No. 190, at page 5403, amend as follows:
-
Insert the words “Ships of Class” after the expression “IV and” and “less than 45m” after the expression “VI” in line 2 of clause 1.
-
Insert the words “Ships of Class” after the expression “V and” and insert the words “less than 45m” after the expression “VI” in the heading of the Schedule.
-
In clause 1 of the Schedule delete the words “Clauses VI, V and VI” and insert the words “Clauses IV, V and VI” in line 11.
-
In clause 4 of the Schedule insert the words “and Class” after the expression “IV, V” in line 1 and insert the word “not” after the word “but” in line 2.

The Minister of Transport hereby amends:
The Shipping (Dinghies) Notice 1989
In the notice with the above heading published in the New Zealand Gazette on the 31st day of October 1989, No. 190, at page 5380, amend as follows:
-
By inserting after Clause 1 (h) the following clause:
“(1) (i) be propelled by an engine complying with clause 3 of this notice.” -
By inserting after Clause 2 (2) the following clause:
“2 (3) All dinghies shall be capable of manoeuvering at speeds of at least 6 knots in calm water with 2 persons on board, and maintaining a speed of 6 knots for a period of at least 2 hours.”

Pursuant to Section 197 of the Shipping and Seamen Act 1952
The Minister of Transport hereby amends:
The Ship Construction (Code of Practice for Ships Not Required to Comply With the Safety Convention) Notice 1989
In the notice with the above heading published in the New Zealand Gazette on the 31st day of October 1989, No. 190, at page 5437, amend as follows:
-
By inserting after clause 13 (3) the following clause:
“13 (4) Every power bilge pump shall be capable of giving a speed of water of not less than 2 metres per second through the ships main bilge pipe when its diameter is that determined by clause 15 of the Ship Construction (Code of Practice for Ships Required to Comply With the Safety Convention) Notice 1989.” -
By revoking clause 26 (1) (e) and substituting the following clause:
“26 (1) (e) Subject to such additional precautions as the Chief Surveyor may consider necessary the Chief Surveyor may permit the installation of inboard engines located below decks which use oil or petroleum fuel having a flash point of less than 43 degrees Celsius in any ship of Class IV or V which does not carry more than 12 passengers and any ship of Class IX which does not proceed beyond extended river limits.” -
By inserting the following clause:
“26 (1) (d) Subject to such additional precautions as the Chief Surveyor may consider necessary the Chief Surveyor may permit the use of outboard engines which use oil or petroleum fuel having a flash point of less than 43 degrees Celsius as the main means of propulsion in any ship of Class IV, V or IX.” -
By inserting the following clause:
“26 (1) (e) Subject to such additional precautions as the Chief Surveyor may consider necessary the Chief Surveyor may permit any ship of Class IV, V or IX to be fitted with tanks for the storage of oil or petroleum fuel used solely for the propulsion of the ship and having a flash point of less than 43 degrees Celsius.”
