Broadcasting Standards Authority—Decision No. 13 and 14

Pursuant to section 15 (1) of the Broadcasting Act 1989, notice is hereby given that the Broadcasting Standards Authority has made the following decisions on complaints referred to it for investigation and review:

(i) In Decision No. 13/90, the Authority declined to uphold a complaint by Alan Papprill of Rotorua that the broadcast by TVNZ Ltd. of a “Frontline” programme on “Tomorrow’s schools” breached the responsibility placed on broadcasters to deal justly and fairly with any person taking part in a programme and to show balance, impartiality and fairness in dealing with political matters, current affairs and questions of a controversial nature.

(ii) In Decision No. 14/90, the Authority upheld a complaint by Clifford Turner of Hamilton, on behalf of the Group Opposed to Advertising of Liquor, that the broadcast by TV3 Network Services Limited of the first of the Richard Hadlee Testimonial cricket matches, where players wore shirts featuring the name and slogan of the sponsor, DB Draught Limited, breached a rule relating to liquor advertising on television.

Copies of decisions may be purchased from the Broadcasting Standards Authority, P.O. Box 9213, Wellington at the price of $5 each or by annual subscription of $100.
