Workshop Craft Syllabus

PURSUANT to section 75 of the Education Act 1964 as amended by section 5 of the Education Amendment Act (No. 2) 1982, the Minister of Education hereby prescribes for Forms 1 and 2 the following Workshop Craft Syllabus as set out in the publication described below, printed for the Department of Education by the Government Printer, Wellington in 1986.

The syllabus known as the Handcraft in Wood and Metal for Primary Schools (1961) referred to in clause 2 of the syllabus notice made under the Education Act 1964 and published in the Gazette on 19 May 1983* is hereby revoked and replaced as follows:

Syllabus for Schools Forms 1 to 4 Workshop Craft

This syllabus introduces students to the principles and practices of design, the traditions and practices of craftsmanship, and develops their technical knowledge. There is strong emphasis on encouraging individual and creative work. Students are involved in a range of discussions, choices and activities out of which they develop their own solutions to problems, then construct them in the workshop. This “design and make” approach is the crux of workshop craft. High standards of practical work and a solid foundation of technical knowledge are as important as ever.

Workshop craft seeks to develop safe workshop habits and attitudes that reflect a pride in workmanship. Students in workshop craft are required to work with a range of different materials in solving design and construction problems.
