Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 389—Inquiry Concerning Tariff Protection for New Zealand Industry Producing Wood Chipping Machines and Screening Units of Ex Tariff Item 84.31.000—Public Hearing
-
The Minister of Customs has asked the Board to undertake an urgent inquiry and report, with the objective of providing Government with a basis for restructuring and updating the Tariff, to establish adequate rates of duty protection in respect of wood chipping machines and screening units as classified within Tariff item ex 84.31.000. This reference arises from an application for emergency protection which is considered to fall outside the normal terms of reference for an inquiry by the Emergency Protection Authority.
-
For the purposes of taking evidence the Board will hold a public hearing in the Hearing Room, Eighth Floor, Cumberland House, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, on Tuesday, 26 March 1974, commencing at 10.30 a.m.
-
Parties intending to make representations or requests about appropriate rates of customs duty are asked to take into account the statement of 7 May 1973 by the Minister of Overseas Trade on the phasing out of British preferences from the New Zealand Tariff, the statement of 7 May 1973 by the Minister of Trade and Industry on the interim New Zealand-Australia Trade Agreement 1973, and the statement of 27 July 1973 by the Minister of Overseas Trade on the New Zealand-Canada Trade Agreement 1973. Copies of these statements can be obtained from the undersigned. In a letter dated 6 April 1973 the Minister of Trade and Industry indicated that, while Government had asked the Board to consider the question of a single tariff rate, for trade policy reasons the Board’s recommendations on this aspect would not necessarily be made public for the time being.
-
The attention of interested parties is drawn to the fact that the Board may find it appropriate to comment upon and compare the relative merits of protection by means of tariff rates and import licensing when used jointly or separately.
-
Any person who intends to tender evidence should lodge, in typewritten form, 14 copies of public evidence and 12 copies of confidential evidence, to be presented under oath at the public hearing, at the Board’s office no later than 26 February 1974. In preparing this evidence the “Notes for Information and Guidance of Interested Parties” prepared by the Board may be of assistance. Copies of these notes may be obtained from the Board’s office.
Dated at Wellington this 11th day of December 1973.
F. E. BEAUFORT,
Secretary, Tariff and Development Board.
P.O. Box 27-046, Wellington.
