Tariff Protection Inquiry for Ceramic Products




Tariff and Development Board Notice No. 285—Inquiry Concerning Protection Affecting the New Zealand Industry Producing Ceramic Products, Including Tableware, of Tariff Headings 69.11, 69.12, 69.13, and 69.14.—Public Hearing

  1. Following receipt by the Minister of Customs of a report from the Emergency Protection Authority, the Government has accepted the recommendation of the Authority that, in respect of tableware classified in Tariff headings 69.11 and 69.12, all the prices appearing in the “minimum price list” in Appendix V to the current Import Licensing Schedule be uplifted by 85 percent and Note (1) to Appendix V be amended to allow transfers, to the extent of 5 percent of the amount of licence held under item code 69.135 to item code 69.130, only on application by the importer and to cover only such classes of goods enumerated in the “approved list” as are not made in New Zealand. The appropriate amendments to the import licensing provisions took effect on 1 June 1972.

  2. In accordance with the provisions of the Tariff and Development Board Act, the Minister of Customs has requested the Board to inquire and report on the nature and degree of protection, if any, it considers necessary to protect the New Zealand industry producing tableware, classified in Tariff headings 69.11 and 69.12. The Minister has since extended the reference to include all the goods classified in Tariff headings 69.11, 69.12, 69.13, and 69.14. The Tariff provisions relating to these goods are set out in the Schedule to this notice.

  3. The Board will, in accordance with its normal procedures, conduct a public hearing in the Hearing Room, Eighth Floor, Cumberland House, Upper Willis Street, Wellington, on Monday, 30 October 1972, commencing at 10.30 a.m.

  4. Any person who intends to tender evidence should lodge, in typewritten form, 14 copies of public evidence and 12 copies of confidential evidence, to be presented under oath at the public hearing, at the Board’s office no later than Friday, 6 October 1972. In preparing this evidence the “Notes for Information and Guidance of Interested Parties” prepared by the Board may be of assistance. Copies of these notes may be obtained from the Board’s office.
