Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

No. 143

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application to the Tribunal by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book Sadopaideia (anonymous), published by Grove Press, New York, as a hard-back "Blue Circle" book.

DECISION OF TRIBUNAL

This novel, retailing the experiences of a young Oxford student with a woman of wealth and social status and with her female companion, deals with flagellation, promiscuity, and the debauching of two young girls.

There is nothing in the novel above a pornographic interest in these subjects.

The Tribunal determines this book to be indecent.

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

No. 144

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application to the Tribunal by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book Harriet Marwood-Governess (anonymous), published by the Grove Press, New York.

DECISION OF TRIBUNAL

The theme of this book, written in the latter part of the nineteenth century, is the complete domination, physical, sexual, and material, gained by a governess over a young boy placed in her care.

The book has a certain literary merit; it is written in an old-world elegant style with the limited appeal of a museum piece. It could, moreover, have value as a study (in grossly exaggerated form) of a not uncommon psychological phenomenon.

The Tribunal determines this book to be not indecent, except in the hands of persons under the age of 18 years.

F. McCARTHY, Deputy Chairman.

28 July 1969.

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

No. 145

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application to the Tribunal by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book Call me Brick, by Munroe Howard. A “Black Circle” book, published by the Grove Press, New York.

DECISION OF TRIBUNAL

This novel describes the sexual adventures of a young girl from the age of nine onwards over a period of a few years with a widely varied succession of lovers. The treatment is offensive and trivial and much of the terminology crude; it has nothing of value that might compensate for these defects.

The Tribunal therefore classifies this book as indecent.

F. McCARTHY, Deputy Chairman.

Decision of the Indecent Publications Tribunal

No. 146

In the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application to the Tribunal by the Comptroller of Customs for a decision in respect of the book The Pearl (anonymous), published by the Grove Press, New York.

DECISION OF TRIBUNAL

This book gathers some 18 issues of a magazine privately circulated in the later decades of the nineteenth century.

Its purpose was avowedly pornographic and it achieves this object without exhibiting any great literary distinction.

However, the Tribunal feels that it may be an interesting example to students of later nineteenth century literature, sociology, or linguistics of a type of writing and a range of social preoccupation of its era, about which little is really known.

The Tribunal therefore declares the work indecent except in the hands of persons over the age of 18 years engaged in research relevant to this material.

F. McCARTHY, Deputy Chairman.
