Board of Trade Notice No. 70—Public Inquiry into Import Duties on Solder

  1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed under Tariff Item 357 (9) which reads as follows:

'Metal, viz: Solder'.

The present rates of import duty are:

British Preferential: 3%
General: 3%

  1. During the course of this inquiry the Board will consider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Board will consider any representations which may be made in favour of the reimposition of import licensing over all or any of the goods in question.

  2. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of this tariff item, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 24 November 1953, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building, Stout Street, Wellington.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses (2nd edition) which have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or from the undersigned.

  4. A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should be lodged with the undersigned on or before Tuesday, 10 November 1953. Each statement will in general need to be presented under oath at the public inquiry by the person tendering it.

Board of Trade Notice No. 71—Public Inquiry into Import Duties on Cartridges, etc.

  1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed under the following tariff items:

Tariff Item 322.—Cartridges, cartridge cases, and materials for the manufacture thereof, viz.:

(1) Cartridges—

(a) Shot, 10 to 24 bore.
(b) Shot, n.e.i.
(c) Ball, .22 calibre.
(d) N.e.i.

(2) Cartridge cases—

(a) 10 to 24 bore.
(b) N.e.i.

(3) Parts of cartridge cases, including tubes for the manufacture of cartridge cases; gunwads, all kinds.

(4) Shot and bullets.

(5) Metal cups for the manufacture of cartridge cases.

Tariff Item 323.—Percussion caps; detonators.

Tariff Item Ex 448 (3).—Cartridge cases, .22 calibre, primed, declared by a manufacturer for use by him only in making .22 calibre ball ammunition.

The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are:

Tariff Item 322 (1) (a)—

British Preferential: 3s. per 100 or 30%, whichever rate returns the higher duty, plus surtax at the rate of one-twentieth of the amount of duty in respect of goods imported from Ireland (except Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India, Pakistan, and Canada.

Most Favoured Nation: 5s. per 100 or 50%, whichever rate returns the higher duty.

General: 5s. per 100 or 55%, whichever rate returns the higher duty, plus surtax at the rate of one-twentieth of the amount of duty.

Tariff Item 322 (1) (b)—

British Preferential: 20%.*

Most Favoured Nation: 50%.

General: 50%.*

Tariff Item 322 (1) (c)—

British Preferential: Free.

Most Favoured Nation: 25%.

General: 25%.*

Tariff Item 322 (1) (d)—

British Preferential: 20%.*

Most Favoured Nation: 45%.

General: 45%.*

Tariff Item 322 (2) (a)—

British Preferential: 1s. 6d. per 100 or 30%, whichever rate returns the higher duty.*

General: 2s. 6d. per 100 or 50%, whichever rate returns the higher duty.*

Tariff Item 322 (2) (b)—

British Preferential: 20%.*

General: 45%.*

Tariff Item 322 (3)—

British Preferential: 30%.*

General: 50%.*

British Preferential: 10s. per cwt.*
