NEW ZEALAND-SOUTH ISLAND-MAPUA HARBOUR CHANNEL BEACON LIGHT ALTERED
M ARINERS are advised that on 12 May 1953 Channel Beacon light marking the turning point from the outer to the inner channel to Mapua will be altered to show flashing orange. The light will flash sixty times per minute, each flash being of $\frac{1}{10}$ second duration.

NEW ZEALAND-NORTH ISLAND-MOKO HINOU ISLANDS Salvage Operations
S ALVAGE vessel 'Foremost Seventeen' is working on the wreck of Niagara in position $35^{\circ} 52^{\prime} \mathrm{S}$. $175^{\circ} 00^{\prime} \mathrm{E}$. Unlighted buoys have been laid within $\frac{1}{4}$ -mile radius of this position. Salvage vessel will show signals as required for a cable ship both by day and night. Vessels are asked to keep clear.

- The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed on domestic clothes-washing machines of the kind included in Tariff Item 353 (8) (c).
The present rates of import duty are:- British Preferential: $20 \%$ plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty in respect of goods imported from Ireland (except Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India, and Pakistan. Australian Agreement: $30 \%$. Canadian Agreement: $30 \%$. General: $50 \%$ plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.

During the course of this inquiry, the Board will consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Board will consider whether the goods in question should be exempted from the requirements of import licensing.

For the purposes of taking evidence on the review of this part of the tariff item, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 29 September 1953, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building, Stout Street, Wellington.

Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses which have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or from the undersigned.

A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should be lodged with the undersigned on or before Tuesday, 15 September 1953. Each statement will, in general, need to be presented under oath at the public inquiry by the person tendering it.
