Board of Trade Notice No. 57—Public Inquiry into Import
Duties on Piston Rings

  1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and
    report upon the question of what rates of import duty
    should be imposed on piston rings which are included in
    Tariff Item 356 (1) (c).

The present rates of import duty are:—
British Preferential: 20%.
Australian Agreement: 30%
Canadian Agreement: 30%
Most Favoured Nation: 50%
General: 50% plus surtax at the rate of nine-
fortieths of the amount of duty.

  1. During the course of this inquiry the Board will
    consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question
    for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the
    Board will consider whether the goods in question should be
    exempted from the requirements of import licensing.

  2. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of
    this part of the tariff item, the Board will hold a public
    inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 18 August 1953, at 10.30 a.m.,
    in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building,
    Stout Street, Wellington.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence should
    comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses which have
    been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may
    be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or
    from the undersigned.

  4. A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered,
    compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should
    be lodged with the undersnamed on or before Tuesday, 4
    August 1953. Each statement will, in general, need to be
    presented under oath at the public inquiry, by the person
    tendering it.

Board of Trade Notice No. 58—Public Inquiry Into Import
Duties on Pistons and Cylinder Sleeves

  1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and
    report upon the question of what rates of import duty should
    be imposed on pistons and cylinder sleeves for motor vehicle
    engines which are included in Tariff Item 335 (2).

The present rates of import duty are:—
British Preferential: 15%.
Most Favoured Nation: 50%.
General: 60% plus surtax at the rate of nine-
fortieths of the amount of duty.

  1. During the course of this inquiry the Board will
    consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question
    for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the
    Board will consider whether the goods in question should be
    exempted from the requirements of import licensing.

  2. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of
    this part of the tariff item, the Board will hold a public
    inquiry commencing on Thursday, 20 August 1953, at 10.30
    a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building,
    Stout Street, Wellington.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence should
    comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses which
    have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes
    may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs

Board of Trade Notice No. 59—Public Inquiry Into Import
Duties on Mufflers for Motor-Vehicles

  1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report
    upon the question of what rates of import duty should be
    imposed on mufflers for motor-vehicle engines which are
    included in Tariff Item 335 (2).

The present rates of import duty are:—
British Preferential: 15%.
Most Favoured Nation: 50%.
General: 60% plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths
of the amount of duty.

  1. During the course of this inquiry the Board will
    consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question
    for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the
    Board will consider whether the goods in question should be
    exempted from the requirements of import licensing.

  2. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review
    of this part of the tariff item the Board will hold a public
    inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 25 August 1953, at 10.30
    a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building,
    Stout Street, Wellington.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence should
    comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses which
    have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes
    may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs

Board of Trade Notice No. 60—Public Inquiry Into Import
Duties on Men’s and Boys’ Overcoats, Suits, &c.

  1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and
    report upon the question of what rates of import duty
    should be imposed under Tariff Item 136 (6) which reads as
    follows: 'Men’s and boys’ overcoats n.e.i., suits, coats,
    trousers, waistcoats, and similar articles'.

The present rates of import duty are:—
British Preferential: 25% plus surtax at the rate
of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty in
respect of goods imported from Ireland (except
Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India,
and Pakistan.

Australian Agreement: 40%.
Canadian Agreement: 45%.
General: 65% plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths
of the amount of duty.

  1. During the course of this inquiry, the Board will
    consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question
    for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the
    Board will consider whether the goods in question should be
    exempted from the requirements of import licensing.

  2. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review
    of this tariff item, the Board will hold a public inquiry
    commencing on Tuesday, 15 September 1953, at 10.30 a.m.,
    in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building,
    Stout Street, Wellington.

  3. Any person who intends to tender evidence should
    comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses which
    have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may
    be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or

    be imposed on domestic refrigerators of the kind included
    in Tariff Item 353 (8) (c).

The present rates of import duty are:—
British Preferential: 20% plus surtax at the rate
of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty in
respect of goods imported from Ireland (except
Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India,
and Pakistan.

Australian Agreement: 30%.
Canadian Agreement: 30%.
General: 50% plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths
of the amount of duty.

  1. During the course of this inquiry, the Board will
    consider the desirability of re-classifying the goods in question
    for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the
