IN exercise of the authority vested in him by section sixty-eight of the Electoral Act, 1927, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, doth hereby direct that the general roll in every electoral district shall be closed on Monday, the fifth day of September, one thousand nine hundred and forty-nine.

Officers Authorized to Take and Receive Statutory Declarations

PURSUANT to the authority conferred upon me by the three-hundred-and-first section of the Justices of the Peace Act, 1927, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby notify and declare that the persons whose names are set out in the Schedule hereto, being officers in the service of the Crown holding the offices stated opposite their names respectively in the said Schedule, are authorized to take and receive statutory declarations under the three-hundred-and-first section of the Justices of the Peace Act, 1927.

Appointing a Member of the Bay of Islands Harbour Board

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the Harbours Act, 1923, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby appoint
George McIntyre
to be a member of the Bay of Islands Harbour Board as a representative of the electors of the County of Bay of Islands and of the Borough of Kaikohe, in place of Charles Foster, deceased.

Exempting Land in the Auckland Land District from the Operation of Part III of the Coal-mines Act, 1925

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by subsection two of section one hundred and seventy-one of the Coal-mines Act, 1925, and of all other powers and authorities enabling me in this behalf, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the land described in the Schedule hereto shall be exempt from the operation of Part III of the Coal-mines Act, 1925, and do hereby further declare that this notice shall take effect as from the date of the publication hereof in the New Zealand Gazette.
SCHEDULE
ALL that area of land in the Auckland Land District containing by admeasurement 33·8 perches, more or less, being Section 476 of the Town of Ngaruawahia.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor-General, this 19th day of August, 1949.

Appointments in the Royal New Zealand Navy

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve the following appointments in the Royal New Zealand Navy:—
Captain John Henry Ruck-Keene, O.B.E., D.S.C., R.N.; lent to the Royal New Zealand Navy and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Bellona,” additional, for passage, to date 2nd September, 1949, and H.M.N.Z.S. “Bellona” in command and as Senior Officer, New Zealand Squadron, vice Hammersley Johnston (date to be reported).
Cedric John Steward, entered as Naval Cadet (Executive Branch), Ronald Morgan Simmonds, entered as Naval Cadet (Engineering Branch), Kevin O’Brien, Writer, N.Z. 12488, entered as Naval Cadet (Supply and Secretariat Branch), and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Maori,” additional, for passage to the United Kingdom, to date 18th July, 1949, and H.M.S. “Britannia,” additional for training, to date 1st September, 1949 (pay accounts to be carried in H.M.N.Z.S. “Maori”).
Mr. William Corbet Laventure, M.B.E., Temporary Commissioned Boatswain, granted a Short-service Commission (two years) in the Royal New Zealand Navy, to date 1st July, 1949. Promoted to the rank of Temporary Senior Commissioned Boatswain and reappointed, to date 10th July, 1949.
Lieutenant (E) John Hugh Gordon Howard, R.N., granted the acting rank of Lieutenant-Commander (E) whilst holding the appointment to H.M.N.Z.S. “Philomel” and for Reserve Fleet and duty on the staff of the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Auckland, to date 18th June, 1949.
Acting Lieutenant (E) Thomas George Ernest Hallin, M.B.E., appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Philomel,” additional, and reverts to the rank of Senior Commissioned Engineer, to date 20th August, 1949. Resignation accepted; to be released 1st October, 1949, and placed on the Retired List of Officers of the Royal New Zealand Navy, to date 2nd October, 1949 (granted the war service rank of Lieutenant (E)).
Probationary Surgeon Lieutenant John Cecil Bayliss, M.A., M.B., Ch.B., confirmed in rank with original seniority of 12th July, 1946.
Mr. Michael Grant, B.E.M., Temporary Commissioned Electrical Officer (L), promoted to the rank of Temporary Senior Commissioned Electrical Officer (L) and reappointed, to date 11th July, 1949.
ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVAL VOLUNTEER RESERVE
Temporary Sub-Lieutenant John Elderson Millar, R.N.Z.N.V.S.R., granted a permanent commission as Lieutenant, with seniority of 9th December, 1946, and appointed to the Canterbury Division, to date 1st August, 1949.
