Proclaiming Tribal Districts under the Maori Social and Economic
Advancement Act, 1945

A PROCLAMATION
Pursuant to section six of the Maori Social and Economic
Advancement Act, 1945, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard
Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New
Zealand, do hereby declare the parts of New Zealand described
in the Schedule hereto to be tribal districts for the purposes of the
said Act, and do hereby assign to each of the several districts the
name appearing at the head of the description of each such district.
SCHEDULE
THE KATIKATI TRIBAL DISTRICT
All that portion of the Tauranga and Ohinemuri Counties, bounded
by a line commencing at Trig. Station 567 (Te Aroha), being the
westernmost corner of Block XI, Katikati Survey District; then
north-easterly along a right line in the direction of the mouth of the
Waihi Stream to the western boundary of part of Waihi No. 5 Block
(part of Waihi Borough, as described in the New Zealand Gazette of
1926, at page 3045); then along the western boundary of the
aforesaid part of Waihi No. 5 Block, across the Waihi Beach Road,
and along the southern boundary of the aforesaid part of the Waihi
No. 5 Block to its south-eastern corner, being a point on the sea-
coast; then south-easterly along the sea-coast and a right line
to the middle of the Katikati Entrance of the Tauranga Harbour;
then southerly generally up the middle of that harbour and the
Waipapa River to a point in line with the north-eastern boundary
of Allotment 72, Te Puna Parish; then south-westerly along a
right line to the south-eastern corner of Maurihoro A Block (Crown
land); then north-westerly along the north-eastern boundaries
generally of the said Maurihoro A Block, Maurihoro B Block, and
Waiharakeke East Nos. 5, 1A, 1C 2B 2, and 1C 1A Blocks, part
Section 20, Block III, Wairere Survey District, as shown on the
plan numbered 28359, deposited in the office of the District Land
Registrar at Auckland, and Lot 5, as shown on the plan
numbered 25781, deposited as aforesaid, being part of the said
Section 20, to the northernmost angle in its northern boundary;
then to and along the eastern boundary of the original Aroha Block,
as shown on the Native Land Court plan numbered 3062, lodged in
the office of the Chief Surveyor at Auckland, being through State
forests in Block X, Aongatete Survey District, and Blocks VII and
XI, Katikati Survey District, to its intersection with a right line
from Trig. Station MA (Ngakuriawharei), on the north-western
boundary of Block II, Katikati North Survey District, to Trig.
Station 567 (Te Aroha), being the westernmost corner of Block XI,
Katikati Survey District; then south-westerly along the said
right line to Trig. Station 567, being the point of commencement.

THE MATAKANA TRIBAL DISTRICT
All that portion of the Tauranga County, bounded by a line
commencing at the northernmost corner of Opou B Block, in Block II,
Tauranga Survey District; then south-easterly along the north-
eastern boundary of that block, and of the Opou A Block to its
easternmost corner; then south-westerly along the south-eastern
boundary of the Opou A Block and the production of that boundary
to the middle of the Otapu Creek; then south-easterly along the
middle of the Otapu Creek to the middle of the Tauranga Harbour;
then westerly, north-westerly, and easterly generally along the
middle of that harbour, so as to include Motuhoa, to the northern
corner of Waihirere No. 1 Block; then south-easterly along the
north-eastern boundary of that block to the western corner of
Opou B Block; then north-easterly along the north-western
boundary of that block to its northernmost corner, being the point
of commencement.

THE RANGINUI TRIBAL DISTRICT
All that portion of the Tauranga County, bounded by a line
commencing at a point, being the south-eastern corner of Mauri-
horo A Block (Crown land), on the western boundary of Block XI,
Aongatete Survey District, and being a point on the south-eastern
boundary of the Katikati Tribal District hereinbefore described;
then north-easterly along the south-eastern boundary of that
district to the south-western boundary of the Matakana Tribal
District hereinbefore described; then south-easterly along that
boundary and the middle of the Tauranga Harbour to the northern-
most corner of Hungahunga-Toroa No. 1B Block, in Block XI,
Tauranga Survey District; then south-westerly along the north-
western boundary of the Hungahunga-Toroa No. 1B Block and
its production to a public road, a right line across that road, to
and along the north-western boundary of Puwhariki Block, the
north-western boundary of Te Ngaio No. 2 Block, and the produc-
tion of the last-mentioned boundary to the middle of the Tauranga
Harbour; then south-westerly generally along the middle of that
harbour to a point on the southern boundary of Block X, Tauranga
Survey District; then southerly along a right line to the northern-
most corner of Waitaia No. 2 Block; then south-easterly generally
along the north-eastern boundaries of that block, the north-eastern
boundaries of the Waitaia Block, and the north-eastern boundary
of the Hairini No. 1A Block and its production to the middle of
the Ohauiti Stream; then southerly up the middle of that stream
to a point in line with the south-eastern boundary of Kaitemako D
Block; then south-easterly along a right line to the northernmost
corner of Section 3, Block XVI, Otanewainuku Survey District,
and a right line to Trig. Station 1039 (Otanewainuku); then
westerly along the production of a right line from the north-eastern
corner of Section 2, Block XI, Waihi South Survey District, to its
intersection with the right line between Trig. Station 27 (Puwhenua),
being the eastern corner of Block VII, Tapapa East Survey District,
and Trig. Station 146 (Te Weraiti), being the western corner of
Block IV, Opoutihi Survey District; then north-westerly and
northerly along the last-mentioned right line to Trig. Station 146
(Te Weraiti) aforesaid, and another right line from that trig. station
to Trig. Station 909 (Waianuanu), being the easternmost corner of
Block XVI, Wairere Survey District; then along the north-
eastern boundaries generally of part Okauia No. 1 Block and
Maurihoro A Block (Crown land) to the south-eastern corner of the
last-mentioned block, being the point of commencement, and
including Motiti Island.

THE MANIAPOTO TRIBAL DISTRICT
All that area in the Auckland and Taranaki Land Districts,
being parts of Kawhia, Otorohanga, Taumarunui, Ohura, Clifton,
and Waitomo Counties, bounded by a line commencing at the
mouth of the Waihekura Stream, in Block III, Marokopa Survey
District; then north-easterly along a right line to Trig. Station T
(Rock Peak), in Block I, Orahiri Survey District, and a right line
to the south-western corner of Orahiri No. 1A Block; then south-
easterly along a right line to Te Puhi-Trig. Station, in Block III,
Orahiri Survey District, and a right line to the intersection of the
south-eastern boundary of Pukeroa-Hangatiki No. 7C 2 Block with
the middle of the Mangapu Stream, in Block VIII, Orahiri Survey
District; then northerly down the middle of the Mangapu Stream
to its confluence with the Waipa River, and down the middle of the
Waipa River to its intersection with the production of the southern
boundary of Section 18, Block XVI, Pirongia Survey District;
then north-easterly along a right line to the confluence of the
Puniu River and the Mangatutu Stream; then up the middle of
the Mangatutu Stream to a point in line with the southern boundary
of the eastern portion of Rangitoto A No. 27B Block, in Block XIII,
Wharepapa Survey District; then easterly along a right line to
Te Ranga Trig. Station, in Block XIV, Wharepapa Survey District,
and a right line to the confluence of the Waikato River with the
Waipapa Stream; then up the middle of the said stream to its
confluence with the Waiteti Stream, and up the middle of the said
Waiteti Stream to its approximate source at peg CXXX on Survey
Office plan 20946 (2) blue; then south-westerly along a right line,
bearing 209° 13′ distance 7767 links; then south-easterly along
right lines bearing 169° 44′ distance 10266 links, bearing 169° 5′
distance 3508 links, as shown on the aforesaid plan; then along
the eastern and southern boundaries of Maraeroa A No. 3B Block
to the intersection of the last-mentioned boundary with a right line
drawn from the Rangitoto Trig. Station, in Block IV, Pakaumanu
Survey District, to the source of the Ongarue River; then south-
easterly along that line to the source of the Ongarue River; then
westerly along a right line to Trig. Station 1394 (Pukemako), in
Block V, Hurakia Survey District; then south-westerly along a
right line to Trig. Station Z (Kopuha), in Block XIII A, Ongarue
Survey District; then north-westerly along a right line to the
intersection of the middle of the Waitataura Road with the middle
of the Mapiu Road, in Block II, Tangitu Survey District; then
southerly along the middle of the Mapiu and Hiwi Roads and the
middle of the road forming the southern boundary of Section 24,
Block I, Tangitu Survey District, to the northern boundary of
Section 11, Block VI, Tangitu Survey District, the northern and
western boundaries of Section 11 aforesaid, the western boundaries
of Section 10, the western boundaries of part Section 1, and the
northern boundaries of Section 21, all of Block VI aforesaid; then
north-westerly generally along a right line across a public road,
the north-eastern boundaries of Section 1, the eastern and northern
boundaries of part Section 8, and Lot 1 of Section 8, all of Block V,
Tangitu Survey District, a right line across a public road, and
along the southern boundary of Section 9, Block IV, Aria Survey
District, to the easternmost corner of Section 6, Block IV aforesaid;
then along the south-eastern boundary of Section 6 and the
eastern boundary of Section 8, Block IV aforesaid, to the south-
eastern corner of the last-mentioned section; then westerly along
the southern boundaries of Sections 8 and 7, Block IV aforesaid,
to the eastern boundary of Section 1, Block VIII, Aria Survey
District; then northerly along that boundary to the northern-
most point of the said Section 1; then along the northern bound-
aries of Blocks VIII and VII, the eastern and southern bound-
aries of Block VI, Aria Survey District, to the Puketawai Trig.
Station; then along the southern and western boundaries of
Section 9 and the southern boundaries of Section 6, Block VI afore-
said, to the Waitewhena Road; then along the Waitewhena Road
to the southern boundary of Section 8, Block V, Aria Survey District;
then along the southern and western boundaries of Section 8 and
the southern boundaries of Sections 3 and 2, Block V aforesaid, to
the south-western corner of the last-mentioned section; then
along the eastern and southern boundaries of Section 11, Block V
aforesaid, to the western boundary of the Aria Survey District;
then southerly along the western boundary of the Aria Survey
District aforesaid to its intersection with the Panirau Stream;
then down the middle of the Panirau Stream to the middle of the
Mokau River; then down the middle of the Mokau River to a
point in line with the eastern boundary of the Mokau-Mohakatino
1G Block; then to and along the said eastern boundary and the
eastern boundary of Mokau-Mohakatino No. 1J Block, through
Trig. Station Tawhitiraupuka to the Mohakatino Stream, and down
that stream to its confluence with a stream intersecting the
Mohakatino-Parininihi No. 1D East Block, the said confluence being
near the westernmost corner of Section 1, Block III, Waro Survey
District; then up the latter stream to the Mohakatino Road,
and along that road to the north-eastern corner of Section 6, Block VI,
Waro Survey District; then along the northern and south-western
boundaries of that section and the western boundaries generally of
Sections 5, 4, and 3, Block VI, Waro Survey District, and the
southern boundary of the said Section 3 and the western boundary
