THE Public Service Commissioner has made the following
appointments in the Public Service:
Harold George Jamieson
to be Returning Officer for the Electoral and Licensing Districts of
Avon for the purposes of the Electoral Act, 1927, and the Licensing
Act, 1908, and their amendments, on and from the 30th day of
October, 1944.
James Lachlan Boa,
Alfred Martin Doggett,
James Gibson, and
Herbert Osman Mackley
to be Inspectors for the purposes of the Meat Act, 1939, on and
from the 1st day of November, 1944.
John Noel Spooner
to be an Inspector for the purposes of the Stock Act, 1908, and the
Dairy Industry Act, 1908, on and from the 1st day of November,
1944.
Victor Storey Pickens
to be Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Maraeroa, on and
from the 4th day of September, 1944.
Christina Margaret McRae (Miss)
to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Tahuna,
on and from the 3rd day of October, 1944.
Blanche May Dodds (Miss)
to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Hillgrove,
on and from the 16th day of October, 1944.
Harold Cyril Rowe
to be Registrar of Births and Deaths for the District of Petone, on
and from the 19th day of October, 1944.
Frederick Anderson
to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Patea,
on and from the 24th day of October, 1944.
Jean Paterson Plowright (Mrs.)
to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Tikitiki,
on and from the 25th day of October, 1944.

Election of European Member of the Rarotonga Island Council
Island Territories Department,
Wellington, 3rd November, 1944.
IT is hereby notified that, in pursuance of the regulations for
the election of a European member of the Rarotonga Island
Council—
Mr. William Hugh Watson, Storekeeper, of Rarotonga,
was duly elected as the European member of the Island Council
of Rarotonga on the 13th day of September, 1944.

Notice of Intention to take Leasehold Estate or Interest in Land for
Buildings of the General Government in the Borough of New Plymouth
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions
of the Public Works Act, 1928, to take the leasehold estate
or interest in the land described in the Schedule hereto, held from
Augustine Henry Hart, of New Plymouth, Fancy-goods Dealer, by
William Ernest Morris and Percy Morris, both of New Plymouth,
Taxi-cab Proprietors, under an agreement for lease dated the 9th
day of September, 1943, for buildings of the General Government:
And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the land in
respect of which the leasehold estate or interest is required to be
taken is deposited in the post-office at New Plymouth and is there
open for inspection; and that all persons affected by the taking
of the said leasehold estate or interest should, if they have any
well-grounded objections to the taking of such leasehold estate or
interest, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within
forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister
of Works at Wellington.
SCHEDULE
APPROXIMATE area of the piece of land in respect of which the
leasehold estate or interest is required to be taken: 22.46 perches.
Being Lots 1, 2, and 3, D.P. 1282, part Section 2335, Town of New
Plymouth (Borough of New Plymouth) (Taranaki R.D.).

Notice of Intention to take Land in Block VII, Maungaru Survey
District, for a Quarry
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions of
the Public Works Act, 1928, to execute a certain public work—
to wit, the construction of a quarry—and for the purposes of such
public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is required to
be taken: And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the
land so required to be taken is deposited in the post-office at Kirikopuni and is there open for inspection; and that all persons affected
by the execution of the said public work or by the taking of the said
land should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the
execution of the said public work or to the taking of such land,
set forth the same in writing, and sent such writing, within forty
days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister of
Works at Wellington.

Withdrawing Notice of Intention to take Land for Agricultural Purposes to increase Primary Production in connection with the Present War
WHEREAS notice was given bearing date the 1st day of March,
1944, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 2nd day of March, 1944, at page 218, that it was proposed, under the
provisions of the Public Works Act, 1928, to take for agricultural
purposes to increase primary production in connection with the
present war the land described in the Schedule to the said notice:
And whereas notice was thereby further given that all persons
affected by the taking of the said land should, if they had any
well-grounded objections to the taking of such land, set forth the
same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the
3rd day of March, 1944, to the Minister of Works at Wellington:
And whereas the owner of the said land has sent to the Minister
of Works an objection to the taking of such land:
And whereas due consideration has been given to the said
objection:
Now, therefore, the Minister of Works hereby gives notice that
it is no longer proposed to take the land described in the Schedule
hereto for the purpose set out in the said notice dated the 1st day
of March, 1944.

APPROXIMATE area of the piece of land affected: 4 acres 0 roods
4 perches.
Being part of Sections 7 and 8.
Situated in Block I, Waihola Survey District (Otago R.D.).
In the Otago Land District; as the same is more particularly

office of the Minister of Works at Wellington, and thereon hatched
blue.

Declaring Area to be a Closely Populated Locality for the Purposes of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936, Section 3
IN terms of section 3 of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936,
the Minister of Transport doth hereby declare the area described
in the Schedule hereto to be a closely populated locality for the
purposes of the said section to the intent that a person driving any
motor-vehicle on any road, street, or other place to which the public
have access therein shall be subject to the maximum speed limit of
thirty miles an hour fixed by the said section.
SCHEDULE
SITUATED within Geraldine County—
All that area near Geraldine consisting of that portion of the
Raukapuka–Orari Main Highway commencing at a point
8 chains measured along the said main highway in a south-easterly direction from its junction with Campbell Street
and terminating at the junction of the said main highway
with the Arundel–Winchester Main Highway, a distance
of approximately 48 chains.
