Appointments, Promotions, Transfers, Resignations, and
Retirements of Officers of the New Zealand Military Forces.

Army Department,
Wellington, 16th April, 1940.

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased
to approve of the following appointments, promotions,
transfers, resignations, and retirements of officers of the New
Zealand Military Forces :—

STAFF.

The notice published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 18
of the 7th March, 1940, relative to Major J. R. V. Sherston,
D.S.O., M.C., N.Z. Temporary Staff, is cancelled and the
following substituted :—

“Lieutenant-Colonel J. R. V. Sherston, D.S.O., M.C.,
N.Z. Temporary Staff, relinquishes the appointment
of General Staff Officer, 2nd Grade, Central Military
District, Wellington, and is appointed General Staff
Officer, 1st Grade (Training and Staff Duties) (Ex-
peditionary Force), Army Headquarters, Wellington.
Dated 6th February, 1940.”

Major W. Murphy, M.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes the
appointment of Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster-
General, Northern Military District, and is appointed
Chief Instructor (Training), Mobilization Camp, Papa-
kura. Dated 15th March, 1940.

Captain J. G. C. Wales, M.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes
the appointment of Deputy Assistant Adjutant and
Quartermaster-General, Northern Military District, and
is appointed Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General,
Northern Military District. Dated 23rd January, 1940.

Captain J. G. C. Wales, M.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes
the appointment of Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-
General, Northern Military District, Auckland, and is
appointed Officer Commanding, 1st Infantry Training
Battalion, Mobilization Camp, Papakura. Dated 15th
March, 1940.

Captain W. W. Dove, M.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes
the appointment of General Staff Officer, 2nd Grade,
Northern Military District, and is appointed Assistant
Adjutant and Quartermaster-General, Northern Military
District. Dated 15th March, 1940.

Captain R. S. Halliwell, M.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes
the appointment of Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General,
Northern Military District, and is appointed Deputy
Assistant Quartermaster-General, Northern Military
District. Dated 15th March, 1940.

Lieutenant J. A. Worsnop, N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes
the appointment of General Staff Officer, 3rd Grade,
Northern Military District, Auckland, on being seconded
for duty with the 2nd N.Z. Expeditionary Force. Dated
12th March, 1940.

Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Glendining, D.S.O., Retired List,
is appointed to the Active List, N.Z. Staff Corps, with
the rank of Major, and is appointed Area Staff Officer,
No. 1 Area, Auckland. Dated 1st April, 1940.

Captain W. J. Smeeton, M.C., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes
the appointments of Area Staff Officer (temporary),
No. 1 Area, and Adjutant, 1st Field Ambulance, and is
appointed Adjutant, Mobilization Camp, Papakura.
Dated 1st April, 1940.

Lieutenant (temporary Captain) T. P. Laffey, N.Z. Staff
Corps, relinquishes the appointment of Adjutant, Mobili-
zation Camp, Papakura, and is appointed Chief R. and
P.T. Instructor, Training Cadre, Mobilization Camp,
Papakura. Dated 1st April, 1940.

Major J. W. Barry, N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes his
present appointment and is appointed Commandant,
Central Military District School of Instruction, Trentham.
Dated 27th March, 1940.

Captain A. H. Jones, N.Z. Temporary Staff, is appointed
Adjutant, 2nd Field Company, Corps of N.Z. Engineers,
in addition to his appointment as District Engineer
Works Officer, Central Military District. Dated 1st
April, 1940.

2nd Lieutenant G. Holderness, N.Z. Temporary Staff,
relinquishes the appointment of Adjutant, 2nd Field
Company, Corps of N.Z. Engineers. Dated 1st April,
1940.

Major A. J. Moore, N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes the
appointment of Area Staff Officer, No. 11 Area, Dunedin,
and is appointed Chief Instructor, Mobilization Camp,
Burnham. Dated 12th April, 1940.

Captain R. J. Eyre, N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes the
appointments of Assistant Area Officer, No. 9 Area,
and Adjutant, 1st Battalion, The Nelson, Marlborough,
and West Coast Regiment, Nelson, and is posted to
Southern Military District School of Instruction, Burn-
ham. Dated 28th March, 1940.

N.Z. STAFF CORPS.

Captain W. W. Dove, M.C., is granted the temporary rank
of Major while holding the appointment of Assistant
Adjutant and Quartermaster-General, Northern Military
District. Dated 8th April, 1940.

Captain J. G. C. Wales, M.C., is granted the temporary
rank of Major while holding the appointment of Officer
Commanding, 1st Infantry Training Battalion, Mobili-
zation Camp, Papakura. Dated 8th April, 1940.

N.Z. TEMPORARY STAFF.

Major C. A. Herman, Reserve of Officers, Supplementary
List, to be Captain, and is appointed Deputy Assistant
Adjutant-General, Northern Military District, Auckland.
Dated 6th March, 1940.

Captain (temporary Major) C. J. Williams relinquishes the
appointments of Area Staff Officer, No. 7 Area, and
Adjutant, 1st Battalion, The Hawke’s Bay Regiment,
Napier, and the temporary rank of Major, dated 11th
March, 1940, and is seconded to the 2nd N.Z. Expedi-
tionary Force. Dated 27th March, 1940.

Major A. H. Wright, V.D., The Hawke’s Bay Regiment,
to be Major, and is appointed Area Staff Officer, No. 7
Area, and Adjutant, 1st Battalion, The Hawke’s Bay
Regiment, Napier, dated 11th March, 1940.

Lieutenant G. F. Vance is granted the temporary rank of
Captain. Dated 15th February, 1940.

Lieutenant W. G. Bassett, from the 2nd N.Z. Expeditionary
Force, to be Lieutenant, and is appointed Instructor,
Central Military District School of Instruction, Trentham.
Dated 14th March, 1940.

Lieutenant A. D. Sinclair relinquishes the appointment of
Assistant Adjutant, Mobilization Camp, Papakura, and
is appointed Assistant Area Officer, No. 1 Area, Auckland.
Dated 1st April, 1940.

Lieutenant-Colonel J. G. Jeffery, M.C., V.D., Retired List,
to be Major. and is appointed Area Staff Officer, No. 11
Area, Dunedin. Dated 29th March, 1940.

The notice published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 137,
of the 9th November, 1939, relative to the appointment of
Captain W. J. Hicks, M.M., is hereby cancelled.

THE AUCKLAND (EAST COAST) MOUNTED RIFLES.

Lieutenant N. S. Reid, from the Reserve of Officers, to
be Lieutenant, with seniority from 29th March, 1940.
Dated 4th April, 1940.

REGIMENT OF N.Z. ARTILLERY.

Lieutenant J. F. Tasker, 8th Field Battery, to be Captain.
Dated 1st April, 1940.

The undermentioned Lieutenants are granted the temporary
rank of Captain. Dated 1st April, 1940 :—

H. H. Babington, 17th Medium Battery.
G. R. Powles, 19th Medium Battery.

2nd Lieutenant D. R. Brickell, 14th Field Battery, to be
Lieutenant. Dated 11th February, 1940.

Captain W. J. Hicks, M.M., from the Reserve of Officers,
to be Captain, is posted to the 13th Heavy Battery,
and is appointed Adjutant, 1st Heavy Artillery Group.
Dated 23rd September, 1939.

Captain W. J. Hicks, M.M., relinquishes the appointment
of Adjutant, 1st Heavy Artillery Group, is granted the
temporary rank of Major, and appointed to command
the 4-in. Examination Battery. Dated 29th March,
1940.

Captain A. A. Wright (late Indian Army) to be Captain,
is posted to the 13th Heavy Battery, and is appointed
Adjutant, 1st Heavy Artillery Group. Dated 29th
March, 1940.

Lieutenant I. S. Miller, from the Reserve of Officers, to be
Lieutenant, with seniority from 29th March, 1938, is
posted to the 13th Heavy Battery, and is granted the
temporary rank of Captain. Dated 29th March, 1940.

N.Z. CORPS OF SIGNALS.

Captain H. C. Caldwell, from the Reserve of Officers, to
be Captain, with seniority from 24th August, 1934, and
is posted to the Southern District Signal Company.
Dated 5th April, 1940.

Lieutenant W. L. Harrison, from the Reserve of Officers,
to be Lieutenant, and is attached to the Canterbury
Regiment. Dated 19th March, 1940.
