Add " Selected from suitable volunteers from boys in the Training Establishment who have completed three months' general training. Volunteers will be called for annually from the entries made in October.
" After selection they will undergo the preliminary W/T course of twelve weeks and will be rated probationary Boy Telegraphist on passing the preliminary W/T course. (NOTE.—Boys, 2nd Class, selected to undergo preliminary W/T course will be eligible for advancement to Boy, 1st Class, provisionally after twenty weeks under training and may be confirmed Boy, 1st Class, four weeks later, if recommended. Their advancement should be ante-dated to date of provisional advancement.)
" Probationary Boy Telegraphists will complete the prescribed final W/T course in the Training Establishment and will be confirmed in rating of Boy Telegraphist on passing final examinations." |

" (a) Trade test of the standard in force in the R.A.N.
" (b) Oral professional examination based as far as possible according to the candidate's trade experience, on the following subjects: To be generally acquainted with the names and the uses of the different parts of main engines; understand the use and management of the various gauges—of the feed, injection, and blow-off cocks; know how to test the density and height of water in the boilers, and what should be done in the event of priming; also know what should be done in the event of water passing into the cylinders, or of a bearing becoming heated and how to act on the occurrence of any of the ordinary casualties of an engine-room.
" Candidates who hold a 1st or 2nd Class Engineer's Board of Trade Certificate and can produce properly attested certificates of character and ability from the works in which he has learned his trade, and from the officers of the ships in which he has served, is to be entered without any further professional examination.
" Educational Qualifications—Arithmetic, including first four rules, simple and compound, vulgar and decimal fractions, and simple interest. Dictation, reading." |
