|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | Engine-room Artificer, 5th Class—contd. | (D) | Substitute “ Officers of the Naval Base, Devonport, with the addition of an Engineer Officer of the relative rank of Lieutenant Commander or above, in the case of Boilermaker candidates.” |
| (F) | Substitute “ After undergoing disciplinary course, accepted candidates will undergo a preliminary engineering course of eight weeks at a mechanical-training establishment. Note-books and sketch-books will be provided at this course, and ratings are taught to make skeleton sketches and notes on instructions received. Further entries should continue to be made whilst the rating is serving in seagoing ships, and the books must be produced for inspection by the examining officers at the examination for E.R.A., 4th Class. Seagoing training will commence on completion of preliminary course, and ratings should then undergo the twelve months’ course prescribed in the Engineering Manual, Article 31. For this purpose E.R.A.s, 5th Class, will be borne supernumerary to complement. E.R.A.s, 5th Class, will not be eligible for advancement to Acting E.R.A., 4th Class, until completion of twelve months’ service. Advancement may then be made by Commanding Officer on the certificate of the engineer officer that satisfactory progress has been made and that the man is likely to become an efficient E.R.A., 4th Class. If this recommendation cannot be given, the rating is to be warned that unless he qualifies for this certificate after completing twelve months’ sea service he will be liable to discharge. At the conclusion of the course an examination should be given in accordance with paragraph 7 of Article 31 of Engineering Manual. Any candidate who fails to satisfy the engineer officer at this examination should be transferred to another ship for three months’ trial and a special report rendered for the information of the Naval Board with a view to his discharge from the Service if a satisfactory report is not forthcoming at the conclusion of the trial period. With a view to encouraging keen, exceptional men who show good promise, and who satisfy the examining engineer officer that they have acquired a sound knowledge of marine engineering and who produce a good record of private notes, sketches, &c., for the whole period of training from the date of the preliminary course until the end of the twelve months’ course, up to three months’ seniority as Acting E.R.A., 4th Class, with pay and allowances, may be gained. This award may be made under the approval of the Commodore Commanding on a report by the Commanding Officer.” | ||
