to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Porangahau, as from the 13th day of April, 1938.

to be Registrar of Marriages for the District of Wakatipu under the Marriage Act, 1908, and Registrar of Births and Deaths for the District of Wakatipu under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1924, as from the 1st day of May, 1938.

Constable William John Harper,

to be Clerk of the Magistrates’ Court at Picton for the purposes of the Magistrates’ Courts Act, 1928, as from the 1st day of May, 1938.

Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22.—Fixing the Closing-hours of Fruiterers’ Shops within the Borough of Waipukurau.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to me from the occupiers of fruiterers’ shops within the Borough of Waipukurau pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :

And whereas I, Hubert Thomas Armstrong, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough :

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I do hereby direct that on and after the 23rd day of May, 1938, all the said shops within the said borough shall be closed in the evening of working days as follows :—

During the period October 15th to April 15th (both days inclusive) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 8.30 p.m., and on Saturdays at 11 p.m.

During the period April 16th to October 14th (both days inclusive) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 8 p.m., and on Saturdays at 11 p.m.

Dated at Wellington, this 4th day of May, 1938.

Result of Election of a Member of the Wellington Fire Board by Fire-Insurance Companies.

Members of the Woodlands Rabbit Board elected.—(Notice No. Ag. 3548.)

NOTICE has been received under the hand of the Returning Officer for the purposes of the first election of members of the Woodlands Rabbit Board established under the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1928, that—

Arthur Cummings Gormack,
Adam Ogston Fleming,
Milert Peter Schmidt, and
John Cullen Edie

have been duly elected as members of the said Board.

Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act.—Notice making and levying Special Rates.

WHEREAS by section 6 of the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act, 1910, it is enacted that the Minister of Lands may from time to time make and levy a special rate on lands in the district constituted under the said Act for the repayment of moneys raised pursuant to section 4 of the said Act, together with interest thereon, at such rate as the Minister of Finance determines :

And whereas by section 11 of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1937, it is enacted that the capital sum chargeable against the district constituted under the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act, 1910, shall be the sum of two hundred and five thousand pounds (£205,000) :

And whereas the Minister of Finance has determined that the rate of interest for the purposes of the said section 11 of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1937, shall be four and one-quarter per centum per annum :

And whereas it is expedient that such special rates as aforesaid be made and levied sufficient to produce annual sums representing 4·856 per centum per annum of the said capital sum of £205,000 :

And whereas the said 4·856 per centum per annum is made up of an annual charge of 4¼ per centum per annum for interest at the rate aforesaid, and 0·606 per centum per annum for the repayment of the said sum of £205,000 :

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the powers vested in me in that behalf by section 6 of the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act, 1910, and section 11 of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1937, and all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I, Frank Langstone, Minister of Lands, do hereby make and levy special rates on the unimproved value of all land within the district constituted under the said Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act, 1910, on a graduated scale according to the classification of such land made in accordance with section 6 of the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act, 1910, being the graduated scale as set out in the Schedule hereto :

And I declare that the foregoing special rates shall be annually recurring rates, and may be levied year by year without further proceeding by the Minister until the moneys in respect of which they were made are paid off, and shall, in respect of the financial year ending on the 31st March, 1938, be payable on the 16th day of May, 1938, and shall in respect to every future financial year be payable on the 30th day of August in such year :

And I further declare that the said special rates shall be payable at the office of the Collector of Rates, Chief Drainage Engineer’s Office, Room 45, Government Buildings, Customs Street West, Auckland, at which office the rate-book may be inspected. A copy of the rate-book may be inspected at the office of the Chief Drainage Engineer, at Thornton, near Whakatane.
