hours weekly, and also a supplementary course of instruction chosen from
the following courses: Academic, commercial, agricultural, art, or manual
training.
(3) The supplementary course to be taken by each pupil shall be deter-
mined by the principal after consideration of the wishes of the parent and
the report of the head teacher of the school previously attended.
(4) A change in a pupil’s course of study may be made if deemed necessary
by the principal after consultation with the parent.
(5) The courses provided shall be sufficiently diversified to meet the needs
of different types of pupils and to furnish ample opportunity for the pupils
to reveal their special aptitudes.
(6) With the approval of the Director, courses of instruction may be
provided for pupils in advance of Form II.
17. The provisions of sections 59 to 69 of the Education Act, 1914,
and its amendments, relating to compulsory education shall apply, mutatis
mutandis, to pupils attending intermediate schools or intermediate depart-
ments.
18. (1) The class doing the work of the first year course in the inter-
mediate school or department shall be called Form I, and the class doing
the work of the second year course shall be called Form II.
(2) The pupils in an intermediate school or department shall be classified
by the principal in accordance with their attainments and aptitudes, pro-
vided that in classifying the pupils of Form I he shall take into consideration
the reports of the head teachers of the contributing schools.
(3) Every pupil on leaving an intermediate school to enter a secondary,
technical, or combined school and every pupil who finally leaves an inter-
mediate school or department shall receive from the principal or head
teacher on a form provided for the purpose a report on his progress at
school.
(4) A pupil who has completed an approved course of instruction in
Form II and has, in the opinion of the Senior Inspector reached a good
standard of attainment therein, shall receive a Certificate of Proficiency
which, for all purposes, shall be regarded as at least equivalent to the
Certificate of Proficiency as defined in the regulations for the organization,
examination, and inspection of public schools.
19. Each intermediate school or intermediate department shall be
subject to inspection by officers of the Education Department, and copies
of the inspection reports shall be forwarded to the Board and to the
principal or headmaster. No portion of an inspection report shall be
published.
20. The regulations relating to attendance registers and returns, and
those relating to the keeping of primary-school progress-cards shall apply,
mutatis mutandis, to intermediate schools and to intermediate departments.
21. (1) For the management of each intermediate school not forming a
department of a secondary, technical, or combined school, there shall be a
committee consisting of nine members—namely, six members elected
annually by the parents or guardians of the pupils attending the intermediate
school, and three members elected annually in the month of May by the
members of the School Committees of the contributing schools: Provided
that the Minister may modify the constitution of the committee as he
considers necessary.
(2) The election of the aforesaid members shall take place during the
first week in May, and the election shall be conducted by the Board in such
manner as the Board with the approval of the Minister may determine.
(3) The provisions of sections 44 to 53 inclusive of the Education Act,
1914, regarding the meetings of School Committees, the powers and duties
of School Committees, and the school fund shall apply, mutatis mutandis,
to the Committees of intermediate schools.
22. (1) There shall be paid to the committee of an intermediate school
and to the authority controlling an intermediate department such annual
grant for incidental expenses as the Minister shall approve for the purpose.
(2) The regulations for the incidental expenses of public schools made
on 11th October, 1920, and 6th April, 1925, shall apply, mutatis mutandis,
to the incidental expenses provided for in this clause.
23. A contributing school shall be graded in accordance with the pro-
visions of clauses 21 and 23 of the regulations for staffs and salaries in public
schools and shall be staffed in accordance with Schedule I of the said
regulations:
Provided that—
(a) In contributing schools of Grade VII the Grade 3 male assistant
shall be replaced by a Grade 1 male assistant.
(b) In contributing schools of Grade VIb the Grade 3 male assistant
shall be replaced by a Grade 2 male assistant.
