of the following year, both days inclusive, and on the working-days (other than the day observed as the statutory closing-day) in the period from the Monday immediately preceding Easter to Easter Monday, both days inclusive, there shall be no fixed closing-hour :

The notice dated the 16th December, 1931, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 17th December, 1931, fixing the closing-hours of (1) men’s hairdressers’ and (2) tobacconists’ shops in the Combined District of Wellington shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

And whereas the said requisition is signed by not less than two-thirds of the occupiers of tobacconists’ shops within the said combined district, notice is hereby given that, pursuant to section 25 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1927, all other shops within the said combined district in which smoking requisites are sold shall be closed at the same hours as are set out herein for tobacconists’ shops.

Varying Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendment, fixing the Closing-hours of Fruiterers’ Shops within the Borough of Te Aroha.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the fruiterers’ shops within the Borough of Te Aroha, has been forwarded to me, desiring that the notice dated the 6th May, 1929, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 9th May, 1929, fixing the closing-hours of fruiterers’ shops within the Borough of Te Aroha, be varied as follows: In the evening of the working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and in the evening of the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day there shall be no fixed closing-hour:

And whereas I, Adam Hamilton, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, I do hereby direct that the said notice shall be and is hereby varied accordingly.

MY LORD,—With reference to my Despatch Circular C. No. 345, of the 16th September, 1931, I have the honour to transmit, for the information of His Majesty’s Government in New Zealand, the accompanying copies of a circular issued by the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament regarding nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for 1933.

  1. I should be glad if the conditions of the prize could be made known to those bodies and persons who are qualified to nominate candidates.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.

ALL proposals of candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is to be distributed 10th December, 1933, must, in order to be taken into consideration, be laid before the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament by a duly qualified person before the first of February of the same year.

Any one of the following persons is held to be duly qualified: (a) Members and late members of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, as well as the advisers appointed at the Norwegian Nobel Institute; (b) Members of Parliament and Members of Government of the different States, as well as Members of the Interparliamentary Union; (c) Members of the International Arbitration Court at the Hague; (d) Members of the Commission of the Permanent International Peace Bureau; (e) Members and Associates of the Institute of International Law; (f) University professors of Political Science and of Law, of History and of Philosophy; and (g) Persons who have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize may also be accorded to institutions or associations.

According to the Code of Statutes, § 8, the grounds upon which any proposal is made must be stated, and handed in along with such papers and other documents as may therein be referred to.

According to § 3, every written work, to qualify for a prize, must have appeared in print.

For particulars, qualified persons are requested to apply to the office of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, Drammensvei 19, Oslo.
