near Shag Point, passing through the Counties of Ashburton,
Geraldine, Levels, Waimate, and Waitaki, but excluding
those portions of the road in the Boroughs of Ashburton,
Geraldine, Temuka, Timaru, Oamaru, and Hampden, being
a distance of 147 miles 40 chains, more or less.

Ashburton–Methven: All that road known as the Ashbur-
ton–Methven Road, commencing at the northern boundary of
the Borough of Ashburton and proceeding thence generally in
a northerly direction via Winchmore, and terminating at the
post-office, Methven, passing through the County of Ashburton,
being a distance of twenty-two miles, more or less.

Timaru–Hermitage, via Washdyke: All that portion of
the road known as the Timaru–Hermitage Road via Wash-
dyke, commencing at its junction with the Christchurch–
Dunedin Road at Washdyke, and proceeding thence generally
in a north-westerly direction, via Levels, Pleasant Point,
Cave, Albury, Fairlie, Burke’s Pass, and terminating at the
junction of the Hermitage and Tekapo Roads, near Lake
Tekapo, passing through the Counties of Levels and Mackenzie,
being a distance of sixty-two miles, more or less.

Geraldine–Fairlie, via Cattle Valley: All that portion
of the road known as the Geraldine–Fairlie Road via Cattle
Valley, commencing at the western boundary of the Borough
of Geraldine and proceeding thence generally in a westerly
direction via Cattle Valley, and terminating at its junction
with the Timaru–Hermitage Road, via Washdyke, at Fairlie,
passing through the Counties of Geraldine and Mackenzie,
being a distance of twenty-eight miles, more or less.

Geraldine–Orari, via Peckham’s Crossing: All that
portion of the road known as the Geraldine–Orari Road
via Peckham’s Crossing, commencing at its junction with the
Christchurch–Dunedin Road, and proceeding thence gene-
rally in an easterly direction, via Peckham’s Crossing, and
terminating at the post-office, Orari, passing through the
County of Geraldine, and being a distance of 2 miles 60 chains,
more or less.

Temuka – Pleasant Point: All that road known as the
Temuka – Pleasant Point Road, commencing at the western
boundary of the Borough of Temuka and proceeding thence
generally in a westerly direction via Waitohi Valley and
Ophi River Bridge, and terminating at its junction with the
Timaru–Hermitage Road, via Washdyke, at Pleasant Point,
passing through the Counties of Geraldine and Levels, being
a distance of 9 miles 60 chains, more or less.

Waimate – Deep Creek Corner: All that road known as
the Waimate – Deep Creek Corner Road, commencing at
its junction with the Christchurch–Dunedin Road and pro-
ceeding thence generally in a south-westerly direction, and
terminating at the eastern boundary of the Borough of
Waimate, passing through the County of Waimate, being a
distance of 4 miles 40 chains, more or less.

Waimate – Waihao Downs Road: All that road known
as the Waimate – Waihao Downs Road, commencing at the
southern boundary of the Borough of Waimate and pro-
ceeding thence generally in a south-westerly direction, ter-
minating at Waihao Downs, passing through the County of
Waimate, being a distance of 8 miles 40 chains, more or less.

Waimate – McNamara’s Corner: All that road known as
the Waimate – McNamara’s Corner Road, commencing at the
eastern boundary of the Borough of Waimate and pro-
ceeding generally in a south-easterly direction, and terminating
at its junction with the Christchurch–Dunedin Road, passing
through the County of Waimate, being a distance of three
miles, more or less.

Timaru–Cave: All that road known as the Timaru-Cave
Road, commencing at the western boundary of the Borough
of Timaru, proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly
direction, via Maine, Claremont, and Tycho Flat, and ter-
minating at its junction with the Timaru–Hermitage (via Wash-
dyke) Road, near Cave, passing through the County of Levels,
being a distance of sixteen miles, more or less.

Pukeuri–Kurow: All that road known as the Pukeuri–
Kurow Road, commencing at its junction with the Christ-
church–Dunedin Road at Pukeuri Junction and proceeding
thence generally in a north-westerly direction via Papakaio,
Uxbridge, Duntroon, and terminating at the Post-office,
Kurow, passing through the County of Waitaki, being a
distance of thirty-five miles, more or less.

Waiareka Junction – Ngapara: All that road known as
the Waiareka Junction – Ngapara Road, commencing at
its junction with the Christchurch–Dunedin Road, near Oamaru,
and proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction
via Windsor, and terminating at the post-office at Ngapara,
passing through the County of Waitaki, being a distance of
15 miles 40 chains, more or less.

As the said public highways are more particularly delineated
on the plan marked M.H. 34, deposited in the office of the
Main Highways Board, Wellington, in the Wellington Land
District, and thereon coloured blue.

to be Main Highways.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government Buildings at Wellington, this 9th day
of June, 1924.

Present:

THE HONOURABLE SIR FRANCIS BELL PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
vested in him by section three of the Main Highways Act,
1922, and of all other powers in anywise enabling him in this
behalf, His Excellency the Governor-General of the Dominion
of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent
of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby
declare that on and after the date of this Order in Council
the public highways mentioned in the Schedule hereto shall
be main highways within the meaning and for the purpose
of the Main Highways Act, 1922.

SCHEDULE.

HIGHWAY DISTRICT No. 16.

DUNEDIN–Christchurch: All that portion of the road known
as the Dunedin–Christchurch Road, commencing at the
northern boundary of the City of Dunedin and proceeding
thence generally in a north-easterly direction via Waitati,
Waikouaiti, Palmerston, and terminating at the north-
eastern boundary of the County of Waihemo near Shag
Point, passing through the Counties of Waikouaiti and
Waihemo, but excluding those portions of the road within
the Boroughs of Waikouaiti and Palmerston, being a dis-
tance of thirty-three miles, more or less.

Palmerston–Queenstown, via Beck’s: All that road known
as the Palmerston–Queenstown Road via Beck’s, commenc-
ing at its junction with the Dunedin–Christchurch Road at
Palmerston and proceeding thence generally in a north-
westerly, south-westerly, and north-westerly direction via
Dunback, Kyeburn, Wedderburn, Hills Creek, Beck’s, Oma-
kau, Clyde, Cromwell, southern side of Lake Hayes, Frankton,
and terminating at the eastern boundary of the Borough of
Queenstown, passing through the Counties of Waihemo,
Maniototo, Vincent, and Lake, but excluding that portion of
the road within the Borough of Cromwell, being a distance of
147 miles, more or less.

Cromwell – Hawea Flat: All that road known as the
Cromwell – Hawea Flat Road, commencing at the eastern
boundary of the Borough of Cromwell and proceeding thence
generally in a northerly direction following left bank of
Clutha River, and terminating at the post-office, Hawea
Flat, passing through the County of Vincent, being a distance
of forty miles, more or less.

Arrowtown to Palmerston–Queenstown Road: All that
road known as the Arrowtown to Palmerston–Queenstown
Road, commencing at the boundary of the Borough of
Arrowtown and proceeding thence generally in a southerly
direction along the eastern side of Lake Hayes, and ter-
minating at its junction with the Palmerston–Queenstown
Road at the south-western corner of Section 7, Block IX,
Shotover Survey District, passing through Lake County
being a distance of three miles, more or less.

Clarksville–Clyde Road: All that portion of the Clarks-
ville–Clyde Road, commencing at the southern boundary of
the County of Vincent and proceeding thence generally in a
northerly direction via Fruitlands, Clutha River Bridge, and
Alexandra, and terminating at its junction with the Palmers-
ton–Queenstown Road via Beck’s, passing through the County
of Vincent, but excluding that portion of the road within the
Borough of Alexandra, being a distance of twenty miles, more
or less.

As the said public highways are more particularly delineated
on the plan marked M.H. 39, deposited in the office of the
Main Highways Board at Wellington, in the Wellington
Land District, and thereon coloured blue.
