Declaring Public Highways in the No. 14 Highway District
to be Main Highways.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government Buildings at Wellington, this 9th day
of June, 1924.
Present:
THE HONOURABLE SIR FRANCIS BELL PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
vested in him by section three of the Main Highways
Act, 1922, and of all other powers in anywise enabling him
in this behalf, His Excellency the Governor-General of the
Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice
and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion,
doth hereby declare that on and after the date of this
Order in Council the public highways mentioned in the
Schedule hereto shall be main highways within the meaning
and for the purpose of the Main Highways Act, 1922.
SCHEDULE.
HIGHWAY DISTRICT No. 14.
CHRISTCHURCH–Dunedin: All that portion of the road known
as the Christchurch–Dunedin Road, commencing at the
western boundary of the City of Christchurch and proceeding
thence generally in a south-westerly direction via Riccarton,
Sockburn, Hornby, Templeton, Rolleston, Burnham, Nor-
wood, Dunsandel, Bankside, and terminating at the south-
western boundary of the Ellesmere County at the Rakaia
River, passing through the Counties of Waimairi, Paparua,
Springs, and Selwyn, being a distance of 31 miles 20 chains,
more or less.
Christchurch–Lyttelton (via Sumner) Road: All that road
known as the Christchurch–Lyttelton (via Sumner) Road,
commencing at the Christchurch City boundary at Heathcote
River Bridge, and proceeding thence generally in an easterly,
southerly, and south-westerly direction via Sumner and Evans
Pass Road, and terminating at the junction of Oxford Street
and Norwich Quay in the Borough of Lyttelton, passing
through the County of Heathcote and the Boroughs of Sumner
and Lyttelton, being a distance of eight miles, more or less.
Christchurch–Akaroa: All that portion of the road known
as the Christchurch–Akaroa Road, commencing at the south-
western boundary of the City of Christchurch and proceeding
thence generally in a south-westerly, south-easterly, and
north-easterly direction via Halswell, Taitapu, Motukarara,
Birdlings Flat, Little River, Hilltop, Duvauchelles, and
terminating at the northern boundary of the Borough of
Akaroa, passing through the Counties of Halswell, Paparua,
Halswell, Wairewa, and Akaroa, being a distance of 50 miles
40 chains, more or less.
Upper Riccarton – Arthur’s Pass: All that portion of the
road known as the Upper Riccarton – Arthur’s Pass Road,
commencing at its junction with the Christchurch–Dunedin
Road at Upper Riccarton and proceeding thence generally
in a north-westerly direction via Yaldhurst, West Milton,
Aylesbury, Kirwee, Darfield, Sheffield, Springfield, Porter’s
Pass, Cass, Bealey, and terminating at the western boundary
of Tawera County at Arthur’s Pass, passing through the
Counties of Waimairi, Paparua, Malvern, and Tawera, being
a distance of ninety-four miles, more or less.
Sockburn–Southbridge: All that portion of the road known
as the Sockburn–Southbridge Road, commencing at its
junction with the Christchurch–Dunedin Road at Sockburn
and proceeding thence generally in a south-westerly direction
via Prebbleton, Lincoln, Irwell, Leeston, and terminating at
the post-office, Southbridge, passing through the Counties of
Paparua, Springs, and Ellesmere, being a distance of 23 miles
60 chains, more or less.
Motukarara–Teddingon: All that portion of the road
known as the Motukarara–Teddington Road, commencing at
its junction with the Christchurch–Akaroa Road at Motuka-
rara, proceeding thence generally in a north-easterly direction
via Gebbies Pass, and terminating at the post-office, Tedding-
ton, passing through the Counties of Halswell and Mount
Herbert, being a distance of six miles, more or less.
Christchurch–Blenheim (via Parnassus): All that portion
of the road known as the Christchurch–Blenheim (via Par-
nassus) Road, commencing at the northern boundary of the
City of Christchurch and proceeding thence generally in a
northerly direction via Papanui, Belfast, Bennetts, Kaiapoi,
Woodend, Waikuku, Saltwater Creek, Leithfield, Amberley,
and terminating at the northern boundary of the Kowai
County at the Waipara River, passing through the Counties
of Waimairi, Eyre, Rangiora, Kowai, but excluding that
portion of the road in the Borough of Kaiapoi, being a
distance of thirty-two miles, more or less.
Rangiora–Christchurch, via Flaxton: All that portion of
the road known as the Rangiora–Christchurch Road via
Flaxton, commencing at the southern boundary of the
Borough of Rangiora, and proceeding thence generally in
a southerly direction via Flaxton to its junction with the
Christchurch–Blenheim to Bennett’s Road via Swannanoa,
passing through the Counties of Rangiora and Eyre, being
a distance of 7 miles 60 chains, more or less.
Rangiora–Oxford, via Loburn: All that portion of the road
known as the Rangiora–Oxford Road via Loburn, commencing
at the northern boundary of the Borough of Rangiora and
proceeding thence generally in a northerly, westerly, and
southerly direction via Loburn, Garry Bridge, Ashley Bridge,
and terminating at the northern boundary of the Borough
of Oxford, passing through the Counties of Rangiora, Ashley,
and Oxford, being a distance of 28 miles 20 chains, more or
less.
Christchurch–Blenheim to Bennett’s, via Swannanoa: All
that portion of the road known as the Christchurch–Blenheim
to Bennett’s Road via Swannanoa, commencing at its
junction with the Christchurch–Blenheim Road between
Chaney’s and Kaiapoi, and proceeding thence generally in a
north-westerly direction, via Swannanoa, West Eyreton,
Horrelville, terminating at the post-office, Bennetts, passing
through the County of Eyre, being a distance of 21 miles
40 chains, more or less.
Christchurch–Chaney’s, via Marshlands: All that portion of
the road known as the Christchurch–Chaney’s Road, via
Marshlands, commencing at the northern boundary of the
City of Christchurch, and proceeding thence generally in a
northerly direction, and terminating at its junction with the
Christchurch–Blenheim Road at Chaney’s, passing through the
County of Waimairi, being a distance of 5 miles 20 chains,
more or less.
Rangiora–Oxford: All that portion of the road known as
the Rangiora–Oxford Road, commencing at the western
boundary of the Borough of Rangiora and proceeding thence
generally in a westerly direction via Fernside, Springbank,
Cust, Bennetts, Carleton, and terminating at the eastern
boundary of the Borough of Oxford, passing through the
Counties of Rangiora and Oxford, being a distance of 28 miles
20 chains, more or less.
Oxford–Waddington: All that portion of the road known
as the Oxford–Waddington Road, commencing at the western
boundary of the Borough of Oxford and proceeding thence
generally in a south-westerly direction via Bexley, and
terminating at the post-office, Waddington, near the Christ-
church–Springfield Road, passing through the Counties of
Oxford and Malvern, being a distance of twelve miles, more
or less.
As the said public highways are more particularly de-
lineated on the plan marked M.H. 33, deposited in the office
of the Main Highways Board at Wellington, in the Wellington
Land District, and thereon coloured blue.
