Makaraka, Manutuke, Maraetaha, and Wharerata, and terminating at the southern boundary of Cook County, and passing through Cook County, being a distance of 30 miles 40 chains, more or less.

Gisborne–Opotiki (via the Coast): All that portion of the road known as the Gisborne–Opotiki (via the Coast) Road, commencing at the eastern boundary of the Borough of Gisborne and proceeding thence generally in a northerly and then westerly direction via Wainui, Pouawa, Pakarae Bridge, Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Te Puia, Rotokautuku Bridge, Mangaoporo River Crossing, along left bank of Waiapu River to Tikitiki, Te Araroa, and terminating at its junction with the Hick’s Bay Road near Hick’s Bay, passing through the Counties of Cook, Uawa, Waiapu, Matakaoa, being a distance of 113 miles, more or less.

Gisborne–Opotiki (via Motu): All that portion of the road known as the Gisborne–Opotiki (via Motu) Road, commencing at its junction with the Gisborne–Wairoa Road near Makaraka and proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction via Ormond, Te Karaka, Otoko, Matawai, Motu-hora, and terminating at the north-western boundary of the Waikohu County at Motu, passing through the Counties of Cook and Waikohu, being a distance of fifty-four miles, more or less.

Gisborne–Wairoa (via Hangaroa): All that portion of the road known as the Gisborne–Wairoa Road (via Hangaroa), commencing at its junction with the Gisborne–Wairoa Road (via Morere) at the southern end of the Waipaoa River Bridge and proceeding thence generally in a south-westerly direction via Waerangaokuri, Hangaroa Village Road Junction, Tini-roto Village, and terminating at the northern boundary of Wairoa County, passing through Cook County, being a distance of 36 miles 40 chains, more or less.

Rotokautuku Bridge–Tikitiki Road (via Right Bank Waiapu River): All that road known as the Rotokautuku Bridge–Tikitiki Road (via right bank, Waiapu River), commencing at its junction with the Gisborne–Opotiki (via Coast) Road at right-bank end of Rotokautuku River Bridge and proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction via Ruatorea, Kai-inanga, and across the Waiapu River Ford near Waiomatatini, and terminating at its junction with the Gisborne–Opotiki (via Coast) Road at Tikitiki, passing through the County of Waiapu, being a distance of eleven miles, more or less.

As the said public highways are more particularly delineated on the plan marked M.H. 22, deposited in the office of the Main Highways Board at Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon coloured blue.

At the Government Buildings at Wellington, this 9th day of June, 1924.

Present:
THE HONOURABLE SIR FRANCIS BELL PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in him by section three of the Main Highways Act, 1922, and of all other powers in anywise enabling him in this behalf, His Excellency the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby declare that on and after the date of this Order in Council the public highways mentioned in the Schedule hereto shall be main highways within the meaning and for the purpose of the Main Highways Act, 1922.

SCHEDULE.

HIGHWAY DISTRICT NO. 5.

NAPIER–WELLINGTON ROAD: All that portion of the road known as the Napier–Wellington Road via Wairarapa, commencing at the southern boundary of the Borough of Napier and proceeding thence generally in a south-westerly direction via Awatoto, Farndon, Whakatu, Stortford Lodge, Maraekakaho Road, Pakipaki, Opapa, Otane, Waipawa, Waipukurau, Takapau, Norsewood, Dannevirke, Woodville, and terminating at the southern boundary of the County of Woodville at the Ngawapurua Bridge, over the Manawatu River, passing through the Counties of Hawke’s Bay, Patangata, Waipawa, Waipukurau, Dannevirke, Woodville, but excluding those portions of the road within the Boroughs of Waipawa, Waipukurau, Dannevirke, and Woodville, being a distance of ninety-five miles, more or less,

Napier–Gisborne (via Wairoa): All that portion of the road known as the Napier–Gisborne (via Wairoa) Road, commencing at the western boundary of the Borough of Napier and proceeding thence generally in a north-easterly direction via Westshore Bridge, Petane, Tongoio, Waikare, Mohaka Upper Bridge, Waihua, Borough of Wairoa, Nuhaka, Morere, to the northern boundary of Wairoa County, passing through the Counties of Hawke’s Bay and Wairoa, but excluding that portion of the road within the Borough of Wairoa, being a distance of 114 miles, more or less.

Wairoa–Gisborne (via Hangaroa): All that portion of the road known as the Wairoa–Gisborne (via Hangaroa) Road, commencing at the northern boundary of the Borough of Wairoa and proceeding thence generally in a northerly direction via Frasertown, Tereinga, and terminating at the southern boundary of Cook County, passing through the County of Wairoa, being a distance of twenty-eight miles, more or less.

Dannevirke–Waipukurau (via Porangahau): All that road known as the Dannevirke–Waipukurau (via Porangahau) Road, commencing at the eastern boundary of the Borough of Dannevirke and proceeding thence generally in a south-easterly direction via Mangatoro, Weber, Ti-tree, Wimbledon, thence generally in a northerly direction via Porangahau, Wallingford, Wanstead, and terminating at the southern boundary of the Borough of Waipukurau, passing through the Counties of Dannevirke, Weber, Patangata, and Waipukurau, being a distance of seventy-six miles, more or less.

Petane–Taupo: All that portion of the road known as the Petane–Taupo Road, commencing at its junction with the Napier–Gisborne Road at the Esk River Bridge and proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction via Eskdale and Te Pohue, and terminating at the north-western boundary of the County of Hawke’s Bay at Mohaka River Bridge, passing through the County of Hawke’s Bay, being a distance of thirty-two miles, more or less.

Napier–Omahu Road: All that road known as the Napier–Omahu Road, commencing at its junction with the Napier–Gisborne (via Wairoa) Road and proceeding thence generally in a south-westerly direction via Taradale, and terminating at Omahu, passing through the County of Hawke’s Bay, being a distance of eleven miles, more or less.

Taradale–Rissington Road: All that road known as the Taradale–Rissington Road, commencing at its junction with the Napier–Omahu Road at Taradale and proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction via Puketapu, and terminating at eastern end Rissington Bridge, being a distance of twenty miles, more or less.

Farndon–Tukituki River (via Havelock North): All that road known as the Farndon–Tukituki River (via Havelock North) Road, commencing at its junction with the Napier–Wellington Road via Wairarapa at Farndon and proceeding thence generally in a southerly direction via Mangateretere, Havelock North, Te Mata, and terminating at the Tukituki River Bridge, passing through the County of Hawke’s Bay, being a distance of twelve miles, more or less.

Havelock North–Fernhill (via Hastings): All that road known as the Havelock–Fernhill Road via Hastings, commencing at the junction with the Farndon–Tukituki River via Havelock North, proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction via the Borough of Hastings, and terminating at the junction with the Napier–Omahu Road at Fernhill, passing through the County of Hawke’s Bay, but excluding that portion of the road in the Borough of Hastings, being a distance of seven miles, more or less.

Otane–Elsthorpe: All that road known as the Otane–Elsthorpe Road, commencing at its junction with the Napier–Wellington Road via Wairarapa and proceeding thence generally in an easterly direction via Patangata, and terminating at Elsthorpe, passing through the County of Hawke’s Bay, being a distance of fourteen miles, more or less.

Waipawa–Tikokino: All that portion of the road known as the Waipawa–Tikokino Road, commencing at the western boundary of the Waipawa Borough and proceeding thence generally in a north-westerly direction, and terminating at the Township of Tikokino, passing through the County of Waipawa, being a distance of ten miles, more or less.

Waipawa–Ongaonga: All that portion of the road known as the Waipawa–Ongaonga Road, commencing at the western boundary of the Borough of Waipawa and proceeding thence generally in a westerly direction via Ruataniwha, and terminating at the Township of Ongaonga, passing through the County of Waipawa, being a distance of ten miles, more or less.

Hastings–Maraekakaho: All that road known as the Hastings–Maraekakaho Road, commencing from its junction with the Napier–Wellington Road via Wairarapa and proceeding thence generally in a westerly direction via Longlands, and terminating at the eastern boundary of the Village of Maraekakaho, passing through the County of Hawke’s Bay, being a distance of nine miles, more or less,
