AIKIKERERU SURVEY DISTRICT.

DESCRIPTION.

The sections in the Waimana and Urewera Survey Districts,
are situated in the valley of the Waimana and Tauranga
Rivers and adjacent thereto, the northernmost sections being
distant about three to six miles from Waimana, while the
southernmost is distant about twenty-nine miles from Wai-
mana, which lies about eighteen miles southerly from Wha-
katanе and about twenty miles south-westerly from Opotiki.

The main road up the valley of the Waimana has been
constructed nearly as far as the southernmost section, and
will ultimately form a main line of communication between
the Bay of Plenty and Lake Waikaremoana and thence to
Wairoa and the East Coast.

The nature of the country is generally hilly and broken,
with small areas of river flat and of easy undulating country.
The soil is mostly of fair quality on pumice overlying clay,
slate, or sandstone formation. Except where mentioned
below, the sections are nearly all in heavy bush, comprising
principally tawa, tawhero, rata, hinau, rimu, with some
scattered totara, kahikatea, matai, and miro in parts. The
undergrowth is heavy and includes raurekau, nikau, punga,
supplejack, mahoe, and water-fern. The altitude ranges
between 400 ft. and 1,000 ft. above sea-level at the northern
end, and towards the southern end the highest parts of the
sections reach an altitude of about 2,700 ft. All the sections
are well supplied with water by streams.

Sections 1 of Block VI, Waimana Survey District, 688 acres
2 roods, has 140 acres of overgrown clearings in fern and
rough feed.

Section 3 of Block VII, Waimana Survey District, 1,116
acres, has 100 acres of clearing in grass, fern, and second
growth.

Section 3 of Block XV, Waimana Survey District, 1,079
acres 3 roods, has 20 acres of clearing in grass, fern, and
second growth.

Section 4 of Block VIII, Urewera Survey District, 725
acres, has 30 acres of flat old clearing in fern.

The sections in the Ahikereru Survey District, with the
exception of Section 1, Block V, which is situated in the
watershed between the Whirinaki and Mangawiri Streams,
are contiguously situated in the valley of the Whirinaki
Stream. The motor and wagon road from Rotorua to
Ruatahuna gives direct access to Section 1 of Block V, fifty-
one miles from Rotorua, and passes within a mile of the
contiguous sections in the Whirinaki Valley, access to these
sections being provided by a junction road laid out up the
Whirinaki Valley at present only roughly formed in a pack-
track stage, this junction being fifty-eight miles from Rotorua.
The nearest of these sections is about one mile and the further-
most about six miles from the Te Waiti Post-office, and
store, which is situated on the Rotorua Ruatahuna Road,
fifty-five miles from Rotorua. The Rotorua to Ruatahuna
Road will eventually form, when constructed, a main through
road to Lake Waikaremoana.

The general nature of this country is about equally divided,
one-half being open, flat, and undulating, in fern, manuka,
and a little grass, the other being broken hills in mixed bush
of tawa, tawhero, rimu, rata, mahoe, kotukutuku, &c., with
a fair undergrowth of raurekau, karamu, supplejack, punga
fern, &c. The country is all well watered by streams. The
soil is generally a pumiceous loam of light quality. The
altitude varies from 1,000 ft. to 2,700 ft. above sea-level.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor-
General, this 1st day of March, 1924.

D. H. GUTHRIE, Minister of Lands.
