Notice to Mariners.—No. 28 of 1922.

BAY OF PLENTY.—UNCHARTED ROCK.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th May, 1922.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 6, of 25th January, 1922, the uncharted rock which was reported to exist about 1·2 miles north-east of the north-easternmost island of the Alderman Group, has been searched for without success. At the reported position of the rock a depth of 52 fathoms was obtained, the bottom being of soft mud. Nothing less than 40 fathoms was obtained within a distance of half a mile of the position stated, the bottom being of a similar nature.

An uncharted rock, which is awash at low-water neap tides, and has foul ground extending about 50 ft. on its north-western and south-eastern sides, exists in the following position :—

North-eastern Islet 225°. Distant 0·5 mile.
Sugar Loaf Rock 320°.
North-west Rock 260°.
Cone Rock 199°.

The rock is steep-to on its north-eastern side, the soundings showing 20 fathoms at a distance of 40 ft. Between the rock and North-east Islet the bottom appears clear but rocky, with depths varying between 15 and 18 fathoms.

Attention is drawn to page 234 of “New Zealand Pilot,” 1919, which states that “several conspicuous islets and rocks lie within 7 cables of these islands.” Mariners should therefore avoid approaching within a distance of one mile of the outliers of this group.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Charts Nos. 3332 and 2543; “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, pages 233 and 234.

B. W. MILLIER, Assistant Secretary.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 29 of 1922.

MOTUEKA HARBOUR.—WHARF BEING RECONSTRUCTED.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th May, 1922.

THE Motueka Harbour Board notifies that the existing wharf at Motueka Harbour is to be rebuilt in ferro-concrete, and is to be extended to a total length of 500 ft. It is proposed to commence work forthwith at the eastern end of the breastwork by a pontoon pile-driving plant.

Between the hours of sunset and sunrise the pontoon will exhibit a white light visible all round the horizon for a distance of at least one mile.

During the progress of the work vessels desiring to swing in the channel when approaching the wharf are warned to turn with their bows toward the southern side of the channel opposite the cool stores. Care should be exercised to avoid the pontoon moorings, the location of which may vary in accordance with the progress of the work.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Charts Nos. 2616 and 3629; “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, pages 287 and 288.

B. W. MILLIER, Assistant Secretary.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 30 of 1922.

WHANGAREI HARBOUR.—DREDGING IN PROGRESS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th May, 1922.

THE Whangarei Harbour Board notifies that it is proposed to dredge a channel, having a depth of 6 ft. at low water and a bottom width of not less than 100 ft., between Awaroa Creek and the Town Wharf, and that a suction dredge with a pontoon pipe-line is now operating off the mouth of Awaroa Creek, and is to work upwards toward the Town Wharf.

The dredger is moored with five pile moorings variously disposed.

Between the hours of sunset and sunrise the dredger will exhibit two white lights visible all round the horizon for a distance of at least one mile, and the outer piles will be marked by red lights.

Vessels bound upstream must pass the red lights on the port hand, and regulate speed when passing the dredger.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 2543; Admiralty Plan No. 2047; “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, pages 170 and 171.

B. W. MILLIER, Assistant Secretary.
