Notice to Mariners.—No. 69 of 1920.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, are published for general information.

MEDITERRANEAN.

EGYPT.—ABUKIR BAY.—EXISTENCE OF SHOAL.

Position.—At a distance of about 8 miles south-westward from Rosetta Lighthouse and 6 miles and 3¼ cables, 67°, from the peak on Nelson Island. Lat. 31° 23½′ N., long. 30° 12¾′ E.

Depth.—21 ft. (rock).

Remarks.—This shoal, which is 5 cables long and one-quarter of a cable broad inside the 6-fathom line, lies in an E.N.E. and W.S.W. direction. The shoalest depth, which is in the position given above, is one cable from the eastern extremity.

Note.—This shoal is to be marked “(Posn. approx.)” on Chart No. 2681.

CENTRAL AMERICA.

COSTA RICA, PACIFIC COAST.—CAPE VELAS.—BANK REPORTED SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.

Position (Approximate).—At a distance of about 100 miles south-westward from Cape Velas. Lat. 9° 5′ N., long. 87° W.

Details.—Tide rips were observed, and soundings of 70 fathoms (blue mud) were obtained, on a bank which is reported to extend for about 100 miles in a 109° and 289° direction, with its centre in the above approximate position.

Note.—An area about 100 miles in length and 30 miles in breadth is to be delineated on the charts by a danger line, with the note “70 fathoms reported 1920, unexamined, P.A.”

BRAZIL.

EAST COAST.—CAPE ST. ROQUE.—NEW LIGHT ESTABLISHED IN PLACE OF OLD LIGHT.

Position.—Close to the site of the old alternating flashing white and red light, which has been discontinued. Lat. 5° 29¼′ S., long. 35° 15½′ W.

Abridged Description.—Lt. alt. gp. fl. (3), W.R., ev. 10 secs., 97 ft., vis. 15 m.

Character. — Alternating group flashing white and red, showing three flashes every ten seconds, thus — white flash 1 sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; white flash 1 sec., eclipse 2½ secs. ; red flash 2 secs., eclipse 2½ secs.

Elevation.—97 ft.

Visibility.—15 miles.

Structure.—Red iron tower on masonry base, 39 ft. in height.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

ROTTNEST ISLAND.—BATHURST POINT LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Date of Alteration.—On or about 15th October, 1920.

Position.—Lat. 31° 59½′ S., long. 115° 32¼′ E.

New Abridged Description.—Lt. gp. fl. (4), ev. 12 secs., 98 ft., vis. 15 m. (U).

Alteration.—The character of the light will be altered from fixed white to group flashing white, showing four flashes every twelve seconds, thus—flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec. eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 7⅔ secs.

Note.—No further notice will be given.

INDIAN OCEAN.

SEYCHELLES GROUP.—BIRD ISLAND.—SHOAL REPORTED WESTWARD OF.

Position.—At a distance of about 5 miles westward from Bird Island. Lat. 3° 45′ S., long. 56° 7′ 50″ E.

Description.—A shoal of about 5 cables in extent, on which one sounding of 9 fathoms was obtained, with probably less water in places.

Note.—The above position is to be surrounded on the chart by a danger line, with the note “Shoal repd. (1920).”

INDIA.

SOUTH COAST.—CAPE COMORIN.—SHOAL AND DISCOLOURED WATER REPORTED SOUTHWARD OF.

  1. Shoal :

Position (Approximate).—At a distance of about 76 miles southward from Muttm Point light. Lat. 6° 52′ N., long. 77° 12′ E.

Description.—A shoal over which the sea breaks continuously.

Note.—The position is to be surrounded on the charts by a danger line, with the note “Shoal repd. (1920) (posn. approx.).”

  1. Discoloured water :

Position.—At a distance of about 5 miles westward from the shoal described in 1 above. Lat. 6° 52′ N., long. 77° 7′ E.

Note.—This position is to be surrounded on the charts by a danger line, with the note “Discold. water repd. (1920) (posn. approx.).”

Remarks.—The s.s. “Atto” reports having passed close to both the above positions, but could discern no trace of either discoloured water or breakers.


CROWN LANDS NOTICES.

Lands in the Auckland Land District forfeited.

Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, 29th November, 1920.

NOTICE is hereby given that the leases and licenses of the undermentioned lands having been declared forfeited by the resolution of the Auckland Land Board, the said lands have thereby reverted to the Crown, under the provisions of the Land Act, 1908, and the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915.
