Raising of Moneys for Relief of Distress in Europe.

Department of Internal Affairs,
Wellington, 4th June, 1920.

OWING to the revoking and cancelling of permits for collections, or receiving or raising of moneys for War Funds (vide Government Gazette No. 28, of the 6th March, 1919), the establishment of further War Funds is considered undesirable.

It being the desire of the Government to assist all those who may be charitably disposed in the direction of providing assistance to distressed Europeans, I therefore notify that, pursuant to the War Funds Act, while I cannot authorize street collections, bazaars, sales, art unions, or the collection of money by any similar methods, it will be quite lawful for funds to be raised by a general appeal, by any person at a public meeting, from church congregations, or other assembly of persons, or for the person so appealing to receive such subscriptions.

Provision will be made by the Government for the transmission by cable, through the High Commissioner for New Zealand, without cost, of all sums so raised, provided they be paid to the nearest approved War Fund for remittance to the Under-Secretary, Internal Affairs Department, Wellington, or are forwarded direct by the person representing the collective donors. Personal donations may be similarly remitted.

With a view to preventing any inconvenience, all remittances may be made by payment to any branch of the Bank of New Zealand, to the credit of the Public Account, the deposit receipt to be forwarded, with notice of payment, to the Under-Secretary, Internal Affairs Department, Wellington, when an official acknowledgment of the donations will be made.

G. JAS. ANDERSON,
Minister of Internal Affairs.
