  1. Hoxa Head, alteration in character of light:
    Position.—On Hoxa Head. Lat. 58° 49¼′ N., long. 3° 2′ W.
    New Abridged Description.—Lt. F., W.R., 50 ft., vis. 12 m. (U.).
    Alteration.—The light has been altered from occulting with white and red sectors to fixed with white and red sectors.

  2. Auskerry fog-signal discontinued:
    Position.—At the southern end of Auskerry. Lat. 59° 1½′ N., long. 2° 34½′ W.
    Description.—An explosive report every five minutes.

  3. Noup Head fog-signal discontinued:
    Position.—On Noup Head. Lat. 59° 20′ N., long. 3° 4′ W.
    Description.—A fog-gun every thirty seconds (occasional).

FRANCE.

NORTH COAST.—AMBLETEUSE.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER OF LIGHT ON LIGHT-AND-BELL BUOY WESTWARD OF.
Position.—Lat. 50° 48½′ N., long. 1° 33′ E.
Alteration.—The light on the light-and-bell buoy in the above position has been altered from occulting white to fixed white.

NEWFOUNDLAND.

EAST COAST.—HONEY POT ISLAND.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.
Position.—On Honey Pot Island. Lat. 49° 10′ 30″ N., long. 53° 30′ 15″ W., on Chart No. 293.
Abridged Description.—Lt. fl., red, ev. 5 secs., 33 ft.
Details:
Character.—A flashing red light every four and three-quarter seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 4¼ secs.
Elevation.—33 ft.
Structure.—A square wooden structure with sloping sides, painted white, lantern red.
Note.—The island on which the above light has been established is known as Honey Pot Island; this name is to be inserted on the charts.

AFRICA.

MOROCCO.—LARACHE, PUNTA NADOR (POINTE DES RUINES).—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.
Position.—Near the summit of Punta Nador (Pointe des Ruines). Lat. 35° 11′ 34″ N., long. 6° 10′ 6″ W.
Abridged Description.—Lt. gp. occ. (4), ev. 15 secs., 261 ft., vis. 11 m.
Details:
Character.—A group occulting white light showing four eclipses every fifteen seconds, thus—light 1¼ secs., eclipse 1¼ secs.; light 1¼ secs., eclipse 1¼ secs.; light 1¼ secs., eclipse 1¼ secs.; light 6¼ secs., eclipse 1¼ secs.
Elevation.—261 ft.
Visibility.—11 miles.
Structure.—A white octagonal tower, 115 ft. in height.
Note.—Pointe des Ruines is also known as Punta Nador.

SOUTH-WEST COAST.—SWAKOPMUND.—LIGHT EXTINGUISHED.
Position.—Near base of old mole. Lat. 22° 40½′ S., long. 14° 31½′ E.
Description.—A group flashing white light.
Remarks.—A note “Extinguished (1919)” is to be placed on the charts against the above light.

MADAGASCAR.

EAST COAST.—VOHEMAR POINT.—SHOAL REPORTED SOUTHWARD OF.
Position.—At a distance of about 15 miles southward of Vohermar Point. Lat. 13° 37′ S., long. 50° 6′ E.
Details.—A vessel is reported to have struck on a shoal in the vicinity of the position given above. The depth on the shoal is not stated.
Note.—The shoal is to be indicated on the charts by the symbol for a rock with a depth of less than 6 ft. and marked “Reported (1919) P.D.”

AUSTRALIA.

NORTH COAST.—PORT DARWIN.—EXISTENCE OF DANGERS.
The following uncharted dangers in Port Darwin (lat. 12° 28′ S., long. 130° 51′ E.) are reported by H.M.A.S. “Brisbane”:
(a.) Position.—At a distance of 7 cables bearing 89° from Talc Head northern extremity.
Description.—A rock (old coral) dries 3 ft. L.W.S.T.
(b.) Position.—At a distance of 9·2 cables bearing 140° from Talc Head northern extremity.
Description.—A rock (old coral) dries 5 ft. L.W.S.T.
(c.) Position.—At a distance of 6·2 cables bearing 48° from Talc Head northern extremity.
Description.—A three-fathom patch.

EAST COAST, INNER BARRIER ROUTE.—CAPE BOWLING GREEN LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.—SIGNAL-STATION TO BE DISCONTINUED.
Mariners and others are hereby notified that the revolving white light on Cape Bowling Green will be replaced by a group flashing white light (U); and, further, that the signal-station will be discontinued; on or about 1st May, 1920.
Position.—On the Sand Ridge, near north extremity of the Cape. Lat. 19° 20′ S., long. 147° 26′ E., on Chart No. 348.
Details.—The revolving white light will be replaced by a new light having the undermentioned characteristics:—
Character.Group flashing white light, showing four flashes in quick succession every twenty seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 15 secs.
Visibility.—14 miles.
Power.—5,000 candles.
Remarks.—The light will be unwatched. The signal-station will be discontinued, and the lightkeepers withdrawn. The other details of the light will remain unchanged.

WARDEN HEAD LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.—SIGNAL-STATION TO BE DISCONTINUED.
Mariners and others are hereby notified that the fixed white light on Warden Head will be replaced by a group flashing white light (U); and, further, that the signal-station will be discontinued; on or about 15th May, 1920.
Position.—Lat. 35° 22′ S., long. 150° 31′ E., on Chart No. 1018.
Details.—The fixed white light will be replaced by a new light having the undermentioned characteristics:—
Character.Group flashing white light, showing two flashes in quick succession every six seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 4½ secs.
Visibility.—15 miles.
Power.—1,500 candles.
Remarks.—The light will be unwatched. The signal-station will be discontinued, and the lightkeeper withdrawn. The other details of the light will remain unchanged.

BISMARCK ARCHIPELAGO.

NEW BRITAIN.—RABAUL.—INFORMATION WITH REGARD TO LIGHTING.
On and after 1st February, 1920, two red fixed lights, 26 ft. above high water, will be shown from cargo-shed, main wharf, Rabaul, one east and one west end of shed, and will be visible only to southward. At west end of wharf shed at height of 26 ft. above high water a white fixed light will be exhibited, which will not show east of line drawn north and south. Lights will be exhibited between sunset and sunrise with visibility about one mile. Three lights formerly shown from end of wharf discontinued from that date. Temporary light formerly shown from Matupi Point discontinued from 1st January, 1920.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—BEACON IN MOTUIHI CHANNEL.

NOTICE is hereby given that the beacon off the north-east end of Motuihi Island has been destroyed, and that it will be re-erected as soon as possible.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 1896; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter II, page 43.

Public Service Entrance.—Special Examination, June, 1920.

NOTICE is hereby given that it has been decided to hold a special Public Service Entrance Examination commencing about the 29th June next.

The examination will most probably be held at the following centres: Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Stratford, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Gisborne, Napier, Dannevirke, Masterton, Wellington, Blenheim, Nelson, Reefton, Greymouth, Hokitika, Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Gore, and Invercargill; but, should sufficient candidates offer, the examination will be held also at other centres. If necessary, candidates will be required to attend at some centre other than the one mentioned in their application forms.

Entries on proper forms, obtainable from the offices of the Public Service Commissioner, the Education Boards, or the Education Department, will be received by the Director of Education, Wellington, up to the 14th May. Both male and female candidates will be admitted.

An entrance fee of £1 is payable at any post-office money-order office, but this will be refunded if the candidate passes the examination and accepts employment in the Public Service.
